Show off! ;) 1000 place is nothing. Do a Google search and you can find it to way more places than that. Somewhere in my years of collected junk I've got a printout of Pi which fills an A4 sheet of paper in a small size font - I don't know how many places that is, but more than easily 1000.

Yes, but the general US public are dumbasses who don't know there is
anywhere actually outside the "good ol' U S of A", while the US
military knows there are countries outside America (even if it's only
so they can invade them). ;-)

Well, like ya know there, Mr. Name, there isn't ANYWHERE outside the US
of A! There are, like fer sure, delusionals who think they are, but they
don't know the facts. The FACT is that the entire planet is part of
glory-hallayleeewwwwyaaaaa America, the blessed one and only. All those
places which claim to be separate are just part of our territory which
were stolen from us ages ago. So, we're NOT imperialists!!! We're just
reclaiming what's RIGHTFULLY OURS. And if ya don't believe that, we'll
be very happy to give you a nukular enema to relieve your philosophical
constipation. We're THAT compassionate!
/Valley Guy=OFF/
Okay, okay, apologies for the bad joke, but couldn't resist.

The US has been a metric country since the late 1800's (no typo's there). But inserted language to keep allow trading in Imperial units where that was more convenient. Since the US traded heavily with the UK, metric had little chance. The UK is selectively metric as well. (In Canada we still use Imperial for building materials since that is strongly linked to US trade though I do see more and more metric in commercial building plans). Also, the US military was never 100% metric, but selectively so. The Army and Marine corps moreso (as they had to work most closely with NATO countries) and the USAF a little less so (still use Nautical Miles, for example) and the USN least so (retain to this day oddball units like "yards"). Most US military bid specs and system specs are supposed to be metric, but they are often heavily laced with Imperial units.

In the early 70s in London, I remember working with wallboard (gyproc if you like) that was labelled "Metric Height, Imperial Width." I was told that this was because the builders didn't care how high the stuff was, but it had to to fit the existing studding, and even if it was new studding, it was still 16" centers, dammit, to hell with these bloody Frenchies. -- Where's the Vangelis music? Here it's typically 8' x 4' (colloquially "gyproc", properly "Gypsum panels", occasionally "drywall"). Some are 12' high (for commercial work and McMansions). Also available in 9, 10 and 11' height. Metric building materials hasn't got a chance here with the US stuck to its "Imperial" ways...

Well, a nautical mile is an extremely useful measure for a ship or a plane, so that use is likely to continue a long time. And, by the way, a Nautical Mile is a metric measure, being exactly and precisely defined as 1852 meters. -- http://2blog.kreme.com All he [Vimes] knew was that you couldn't hope to try for the big stuff, like world peace and happiness, but you might just about be able to achieve some tiny deed that'd make the world, in a small way, a better place. But its roots are of a second (degree) around the equator. 360 * 60 = 21600 nm is the circumference of earth at equator. Now defined as 1852 metres. This definition worked relatively well as long as ships did not navigate too far from equator to northern latitudes where the actual distance to travel one second or arc started to vary. The kilometre was originally defined as 1/10,000 the distance between equator and north pole. (so 1 metre is /10,000,000 of that distance). Once more accurate distances between equator and the not so round earth were made, keeping the original definition would have required a change in the metre, it it was far simpler to keep it length and change its definition. It is currently defined relative to the speed of light in vacuum. So while the nautical mile is still in use, it is no longer so effective now that ships and especially airplanes travel to far northernand southern latitudes. So it is just another measure available and used more because of tradition than because of its usefulness in a modern environment with GPS etc.

It's minute of latitude because that is constant regardless of latitude. As I've pointed out to you before.

A minute of latitude when you are 1metre south of north pole means .29088 mm (that is 0.0002988 metre) (the total circumference is 6.28 metres at that latitude). at equator, it is roughly 1852m.

No matter what latitude a minute of latitude is almost exactly 1 NM. There is no convergence as with longitude towards the poles. That is why the minute of latitude is used in navigation. You compare a length of distance against a minute of latitude on the chart you have (at any latitude) and get your distance. No need to add "at the equator" since the chart you're using locally usually does not include the equator. It always has the latitude minutes marks on the meridian lines. Fundamentally goes back to the use of sextants (and its predecessors). While never easy to determine longitude or distance traveled east-west, it's always easy to determine latitude and distance traveled north-south.

No. The definition was originally 1 minute of arc along any meridian. As you say above using longitude was impossible w/o an accurate clock that would work at sea. Using latitude (with a sextant) works at all latitudes and needs no clock. Just a visible celestial body. Any body. Further, as said, using a chart for, say the North Sea, would have the minute markings for each marked meridian and therefore be a usable scale. The equator is not on those charts.

No, that's a minute of longitude at a latitude of 1 metre south of the north pole. -- "If you're not able to ask questions and deal with the answers without feeling that someone has called your intelligence or competence into question, don't ask questions on Usenet where the answers won't be carefully tailored to avoid tripping your hair-trigger insecurities." - D M Procida, UCSM
