So what? It *is* a metric measure. Period. Anyone claiming differently

nautical mile is defined as 1852 metres, and is in the
http://www.bipm.org/fr/about-us/ list of defined measures. But it is not
part of the metric system whose distance measures are in metres.

It is not an SI unit, it *is* a metric measure.

That would be 1 minute of latitude around any meridian.

You're wrong. It is not a metric measure. It is defined (now) using an
exact number of metres. That does not make it "metric" (or SI) any more
than a 12 Oz beer bottle is metric when labeled as 341 ml.

It DOES make it a metric measure because the measure is defined using a
metric scale. I never said it was SI. In fact, I think I said
specifically that it was not.

> any more than a 12 Oz beer bottle is metric when labeled as 341 ml.

12Oz is not defined as 341ml, that is an approximate conversion.

It is not a "metric measure" it is a thing defined using a metric
measure. If you can't see the difference that's not my problem.

Not in Canada. The bottle is marked 341 ml because that is what the
bottler declares it contains. Not an approximation of 12 fl oz. What
it contains is defined with a metric measure.

No, it is not a metric measure. But the Nautical Mile is now defined as
exactly 1852 metres.

The original NM was 1 minute of latitude. As you say, very useful.

Then the British (Navy?) set it (at some point) as exactly 6080 feet
(1853.184 metres).

Its definition kept changing due to different estimates of the
circumference of the earth (along the meridians) it was not exactly 1852
metres but all sorts of values depending on who, what, where, when was
being navigated.

I worked on airborne nav systems for military aircraft in the 80's and
our contracts with the end user would set out which value for NM would
be used in the code. Across the USAF we used 2 or 3 different values,
USMC another, Italian Cabinieri this, Italian Navy that, Turks this one,
Swiss this, and so on. (There were 2 or 3 "dominant" ones). 1852 m was
actually not all that common in those days.

The original "metre" was set as 10,000,000 metres from the equator to
the poles. (Impossible that the south limb is the same as the north
limb along a given meridian - never mind the infinite number of them ... ).

So. 90° * 60' = 5400 NM = 10,000 km = 1851.19... metres per NM.

Of course the actual distance from the equator to the poles is not
exactly 10,000 km or 5400 NM so using the physical earth as a reference
for a definition was not a solid idea from the start (though pretty good
overall). Note that 1° near the equator is 59.7 NM, but near the poles
it about 60.3 NM[1]. And always changing as the Earth changes.

Further, local projections would result in local definition of a NM when
converted to metres for local use (I seem to recall the Swiss using a
particular value along with their particular "Swiss Grid" (a UTM system)).

Sometime in 1929 there was some conference and it was decided (with the
latest geomatics information of the day) that 1852 metres would be the
accepted international standard. 1 minute of latitude is not exactly
1852 metres, however. (Close enough not to matter, of course).

But the US NM was 6080.2 feet (1853.249 metres) until 1954.

It has taken a long time to get fixed into systems ... and I bet there
are systems out there that are still using older definitions of the NM.

As a pilot I've often used minutes of latitude on charts to estimate
distances, of course. There is it's best practical value that you
referred to.

Base units and derived units. Metres. Cubic metres.

Kg. grams.

Seconds.

Amperes.

The above are metric units.

Saying a Nautical Mile is 1852 metres long does not make it a metric
unit. They could well have made it 1851.15 metres and it would have
been a fine unit to use and it still would not be "metric" - just
defined in metres.

Well, since the US does _not_ use the Imperial scale, I'm not so sure
that's why the US has never adopted the metric system. Trading between
the UK and US would still involve conversion of units. For example, 1
Imperial gallon = 1.2 US wet gallons (how gasoline is sold) or = 1.3 US
dry gallons (how raspberries could be sold; see 'peck' as a unit of
measure).

Inertia, hubris, and xenophobia are much more likely explanations for
sticking with US gallons, etc. (But we _do_ have our 2-liter (NOT
'litre') bottles of pop!)

Yes, the US military and US business have been much more likely to use
metric because of necessity and profits.

Of course it does. Feet. Inches. Miles. etc. One difference is the
tiny US gallon as you discuss below (I had no idea about "dry gallons").

Those were easier to convert, I suppose.

The US uses metric in many fluids, beginning with alcohol, as those are
international standards so useful for IMPEX.

The military for scientific and cooperative reasons.

Commercial because foreign contracts require it.

The US military started switching to that format in the early 1980s

Don't be silly. Computers don't "require" anything - they do as they're
told. I expect it was some geeks slipping it through, and they were

Not so sure about that. There are so many databases from those years
(pre- 90's) where dates were entered as MMDDYY, or DDMMYY (and no
indication of which - needed to save space) used by government and
military, that the use of formats was more granular - brigade level or
smaller.

It's not just building materials. Fruit and vegetables are priced and
sold per pound, while cheese, meat, and fish are priced in metric units.
Milk is sold by the litre, butter by the pound. Temperatures are given
in ºC, except when baking, when ºF are used. Lots of other examples
abound.

Here its pretty metric, but sizes haven't all changed to round metric
amounts.

Butter is sold in 453 gram blocks. (1 Lb.)

Beer is in 341 ml bottles (12 imp. Oz).

Etc.

Other products are sold in round amounts of ml or litres or Kg.

The official weights and measures of Canada are metric, but groceries
are advertised in pounds, with the metric equivalent in small text.
There was a court case, went to the supreme court, allowed this. I don't
have a reference, but Trudeau-the-Elder wanted to outright ban the
Imperial system, and it became a "freedom of expression" thing.

Milk is sold in litres. We have a real interesting pollutant where they
sell 4 litres of milk, in 3 plastic bags, stuffed into another plastic
bag which the shop-keeper will happily put into a plastic carrier bag.
Bags of milk confuse the American tourists.

Butter is sold in pounds, but the bricks are marked in metric (454
grams); I think it's because packaging equipment comes from the US. We
have to pay a premium for sticks though, so I cut my bricks up (I like
the sticks).

Eggs are sold by the dozen. (I've seen a carton of ten eggs in France).

Baking is given in F (usually 350, the people's temperature), in
hono(u)r of Julia Child, and despite the best efforts of Gordon Ramsey.
Jamie Oliver would like us to use Gas Mark 4.

Gas is interesting. It's sold in litres, but 4 litres (pretty much) make
up a US gallon, with the result that while we still talk about gallons,
we don't mean the Imperial one.

A pint of beer is 20 bloody ounces, though.

Many bilingual cooking instructions will use the F in english because
they refuse to adapt, while using C in french. It was conservatives in
Ontario (especially Peterborough) who opposed metric and ruined the
conversion for Canada. Other countries such as Australia and NZ
succesfully converted all measures. Canada stopped halfway.

Sorry, but when it was sold in gallons, it was sold in imperial gallons,
not US gallons. So a direct comparison was never possible.

I remembger Ilford photographic products were confusing as hell because
their gallon equivalents never matched (I suspect they use US gallons),
but I grew up metric and always used metric measures and my measuring
equipment was metric for photo processing.

At grocery store, I make a point or asking for meat in metric
quantities. I refuse to let elderly conservative prevent me from using
the system in which I was educated in. I was in grade 2 when the switch
was announced and our school immediatly started to teach us only netric
so I never learned how many feet in a mile.

Am Imperial gallon is pretty much bang on 5 litres.

When I started flying the aircraft manuals were US gallons but the
airport FBO's sold in Imperial gallons.

The switch to metric wasn't a big deal if you knew how to operate your
wheel. (E6B).

Then there's the Gimli Glider (which I've flown on).

4.55 litres is hardly 5 litres.
