I used to do it often. Older versions of TextEdit apparently preserved
whatever line break style it found on opening.
Now however, it outputs legacy Mac line breaks, but only on lines that
are edited. So if I edit a script in TextEdit, I have to use perl to
repair it after saving. Otherwise it will fail on the next run when it
gets to the edited line.
TextWrangler is one way to avoid that, but it is slightly more work to
launch than TextEdit. 'vim,' no thanks. Better than ''vi' but not by much.

Hmm. As a long time unix user and a user of OS X since it was released, I'm confused about your assertion. I think Apple's goal has _always_ been to make Macs dummy-friendly. From my perspective they have combined that (since OS X began) with also making Macs friendly to many much more sophisticated computer users. Which seems like a good trick, and not one that I see being jeopardized. I realize that the world of computers is no stranger to snobbery, and I realize you may personally not take advantage of the dummy-friendliness, but if the dummy-friendliness doesn't prevent you from using your computer to do the tasks you need to do, why should it be a bad thing?

It does that in Mail. Every few minutes, a new Draft is created.
When the final draft is sent, the others are deleted--sometimes.
But they all go in the trash, so if you delete something you didn't want
to delete, you have to wade through a zillion versions of your own
messages to find the one you want to recover.

On my system, and it's been like this with every version of Mail since 10.1, there are no duplicate copies of messages in the Drafts folder, and when a message is sent, it's removed from the Drafts folder, and only one copy is placed in the Sent folder, and none in the Trash. -- Tea Party Patriots is to Patriotism as People's Democratic Republic is to Democracy.

I never saw this until this year. So I assumed it was a "feature" of
Lion. But it's possible it is something stupid that GMail did.
Or a combination of both.

Michelle is correct in her description of Mail's behavior. I don't know where this behavior is coming from, but it has nothing to do with the Mac OS or Mail.app--unless there is some well hidden setting that I am unaware of and that is off by default but somehow got switched on on your machine. I doubt that, however. I forwarded a description of this behavior to several of my Mac-using friends and none of them had seen or heard of such a thing. Versions is useless to me where I need versioning because I already have
better solutions. It is a waste of resources where I don't need it.
Autosave is useless to me anywhere, and harmful in a few places.
Lion has no other new features worth anything at all to me.
Therefore installing Lion has degraded my computer. If I had known, I
would not have installed it. Now it is impractical to go back.

WHile Full Screen Apps are a bad joke on my desktop machine, they are absolutely brilliant on my MacBookPro. The much improved gestures in Lion have made a huge impact in how I use my computers (though you won't really see this without a trackpad). The improvements to Mail's feature set in 10.7 were also very welcome, and I use the 'favorites' bar almost exclusively to switch mailboxes now. In addition, there are all sorts of little features that I really like. I can select, for example, a bunch of items in my download folder and then rclick and say "Make a new folder with these items." I don't use that often, but when I do, I sure appreciate it. Screen Sharing got a huge improvement in that I can use it to login to a remote machine that someone else is using and NOT have to login to their session. They can keep working in their login, and I can be using my own login at the same time. This is a *huge* improvement for me as it means I no longer have to schedule most admin tasks overnight when the machines aren't in use. I know some people get their panties in a bunch over Resume, but I love it. Depends on the definition of "leading." In terms of innovation, it's

I've tried various flavours of Linux and am really looking for something that is both stable and reasonably up to date. As mentioned recently in another news group you read recently, Fedora is "bleeding edge", but does provide up to date news reader and other software, which more stable versions don't. However, the latest Fedora kernel update broke VirtualBox, so I'm back to considering something else. This was a UK children's TV programme shown from the 1964 to 1988. It featured a house with different shaped windows and the viewers were asked to guess which window we'd be looking through today. Early episodes started with "Here's a house, here's a door. Windows: 1 2 3 4, ready to knock? Turn the lock - It's Play School." Here we go: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play_School_%28UK_TV_series% 29#Contents_of_the_show> "A section of each episode was a filmed excursion into the outside world taken through one of three windows: the young viewers were invited to guess whether the round, square, or arched window would be chosen that day. A triangular window was added in 1983." -- Paul Sture

I was in http://manshatshop.com/home/ the other day, buying a hat. I ended up with a creme-colored straw fedora with a black band. I asked about a red fedora, but they didn't have any. :-D They could get one, though. :-o -- May joy be yours all the days of your life! - Phina We are but a moment's sunlight, fading in the grass. - The Youngbloods Those who eat natural foods die of natural causes. - Kperspective

One of my son's friends recently complained about not being able to find
his red hat. So I said "Use your Fedora" but he didn't get it.
Apparently he's not as geeky as I thought.
