#62197 — High Heat

SubjectHigh Heat
Message-ID<2014071321150331985-xxx@yyyzzz>
My mac's been running slow the past couple of days. Today I got a
kernal panic, my first. Two days ago I had an incredible slowdown of
response. I'd open a finder window and it would take 30 seconds of
waiting before it displayed the contents of the folder.

The CPU doesn't seem to be labored, the memory isn't packed to the
gills. I have been doing some DVD writing and reading for a number of
hours during *part* of this period. Analysis indicating no disc
problems. I started fiddling with TechTool Pro and when I checked the
S.M.A.R.T thingee it showed me this:

	http://grab.by/yxog

I turned on the element in iStats menus so I can see my temperature.
It's 115. What should it be. I haven't done anything on the computer
for hours, and write now I'm typing a post and uploading and image to
TinyGrab and such. Nothing much.

Any ideas on all this?

I'm not ripping a video DVD and it's up to 160 degrees and holding.
CPU is obviously quite high and the temperature in the room is 80
degrees.

Should be NOW ripping...

It just finished, while I was off erranding, and at 116 degrees. 79
degrees in here. Tomorrow predicted to be warm and sunny with or
without humidity from a nearby marine layer that may or may not be
laying.

FWIW, on my iMac (mid-2010, 27", 3.6 GHz i5, running ML), the CPU
temperature is about 125°F. This is its usual range, and I have had no
problems like you describe.

This may or may not have anything to do with the heat. There are some
people complaining about slow Macs with Mavericks, especially Finder
windows.

A couple of suggestions I've come across to try are:

   - deleting ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
(you may then need to reset some of your Finder preferences)

   - commenting out a line in the /etc/auto_master
configuration file, which has to be done via Terminal
          - open Terminal
          - type: sudo nano /etc/auto_master
          - you will see a line that says something like
                /net -hosts -nobrowse,hidefromfinder,nosuid
          - change that line by adding a # character at the
start (the # can be removed again later if you
            want to)
          - press Ctrl-O to save the changes
          - press Ctrl-X to quit
          - this stops Finder from potentially stalling when
checking for networked drives that aren't there,
which is apparently a bug in Mavericks

Thanks for the ideas, duly stashed.

What temperature? Is that F or C?

Power down, then Reset the SMC by unplugging the power cord for 30
seconds. Plug in, re-start and see what you get.

Has it occurred to you to examine the system and console logs during
these slowdowns to see what error messages are posted there at the time
of the problem?

"Did I examine" would seem be less insulting. The answer is yes, but I
couldn't find anything of note. That said, there are plenty of ways to
insult my ability to parse system and console logs.

Your inference is wrong. It was not an insult.

You found zero errors in the logs?

Is that supposed to be a question? If so, you'll need to rephrase it
using correct grammar.

A lot of fun. : )

If you think my life is significantly influenced by anything on Usenet,
you're mistaken. Jab away, though, if it helps you somehow feel better

You mean you're an airhead?

Neatly avoiding the real point!

About grammar and writing, dearie me, dearie me, (grammar points are
in many ways the last refuge of the scoundrel), look past your holy
nose. A question mark at the end of a sentence can indicate the way
someone might say something in a questioning way, it is informal, it
means what do you think about this!

You can do better JR, if you just pause and think a little before
replying. If you care to enrol in my classes on related matters,
please indicate (there are fees involved).

If you have a point, you're certainly not making it very clearly, which
leads me to wonder just how sincere you are being. If you have something
to say to me, why don't you just say it plainly instead of beating
around the bush or trying to disguise it as something it's not?

Sure, sometimes you are as thick as a brick. Look again at the thread
and see what you said and gtr's reasonable objection. What is hard to
understand about me saying that I thought you would not understand his
point?

Reasonable? That's debatable. I asked if it had occurred to him to check
the console and system logs. It's a legitimate question. He responded
indicating he felt that asking if it had occurred to him was somehow an
insult. You apparently think it was reasonable of him to feel insulted.
The problem is, you're both wrong in your inference that I insulted gtr.
I did no such thing.

It turns out he says he had thought of it, but hadn't mentioned it,
which we wouldn't know if I hadn't asked. And if I had not followed that
up with additional questions, we would not know that he didn't know what
to look for and didn't understand most of the log messages he read. We
only know that now because I asked. And now that I've given him some
information about what to look for specifically, we can find out if
there are any pertinent errors posted to the log during his observed
problem, which may help him resolve the issue.

Insist otherwise all you want; I know what I meant by my question better
than either of you, and it was no insult.

> What is hard to understand about me saying that I thought you would

Oh, I understand it. It's just wrong. And your juvenile jabs and insults
help nothing. Do you have anything of substance to add to this
conversation, or are you just hell bent on slinging dirt my way in some
misguided attempt to serve "justice" for gtr?
