how do you plan on doing that, while keeping the watch small enough to
not look stupid but can do everything that the apple watch or other
smart watches (which have similar battery life) do?

be specific.

That's an incredibly ridiculous statement to make.

What makes you think * I * need to have a plan to do that? It isn't *
MY * product.

When I decide to make such a product, rest assured, you'll be the FIRST
person I'll tell.

How do YOU plan on fixing it?

nothing ridiculous about it.

you said apple should have made a watch that lasted longer, so explain
what they could have done differently so that it would last longer.
what mistakes did apple make?

since you can't, we can only conclude you're full of shit.

the reality is that apple went well out of their way to maximize
battery life. unfortunately, the laws of physics and the state of
battery technology today puts some real world limitations on things.

Did I say they made any mistakes? You seem to want a fight... we'll
look somewhere else.

I said the battery life would appear to be a problem, and that having
to charge it every day is a pain in the ass.
Have you read anything on the battery life?

yes you did say they made a mistake.

you said that apple should have designed it so that the "friggin' watch
doesn't need to charge every 18 hours". in other words, they screwed
up.

so what specifically did they do wrong? how could apple have designed a
watch that lasted longer than 18 hours yet retained its functionality?

simple question.

That's kind of what I thought... but giving a negative opinion on the
new product apparently must mean that you hate it, and that it needs to
be fixed.

All I said was that I'd hoped they'd done something about the short
battery life issue. I didn't realize that made me an apostate.

Given the functionality and size of the widget, that it would need only
one charge per day in typical use is already quite the achievement.

If Apple have made a mistake here it is in calling it a Watch. So
people with little imagination believe it should run on a tiny watch
battery for 5 years while providing all the functionality that it will
provide.

Really. It's tiny.

Really. It has an ARM processor.

Really. It has memory.

Really. It has backlighting.

Really. It has a display.

Really. It has sensors.

Really. It has communications.

Really. It's going to suck the battery dry.

Really. It's going to need to be charged daily.

Really. It's going to be fine.

Really.

Quick: tell me who now makes watches that meet your requirement.

Now: which of them can do what an Apple Watch can do?

None, huh?

What hasn't yet been truly defined is how this new iDevice will be used,
and what "key" application will be developped. Battery autonomy
requirements vary depending on activity.

Is this to be worn only during black tie events ? Every day watch ? Only
when doing certain activities ?

I was recently made aware that garmin now makes watches.
https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/c10002-p1.html

Makes me wonder if the future will see one watch that does everything
"average", or multiple watches that are excellent for each of their
purposes. So you'd have one watch for black tie events, one for
swimming/runninG/cycling and one for work, ordinary life.
Activity-specific watches need less battery autonomy than a generic
watch you wear all the time.

Apple started with generic one-model-for-everything for iPhone and iPad,
but has since diversified. With 5s and 5c, and now 6 and 6+, they now
have multiple models per year instead of only recycling previous years
products.

I think the watch is definitely a hobby. One where the only way to know
if it will pan out or not is to actually release it and see what happens
to it.

The problem is that nobody really knows how/if it will pan out.

BTW, prior to the launch, media in Canada had speculated the watch would
be usable to unlock your car's doors. This was not mentioned during
keynote. Wondering if this was a "not yet ready" feature that couldn't
be announced, or just wrong speculation. Having the watch work as your
car dongle to unlock doors would make sense and be usefull (for those
who have cars).

Like the other devices, it depends on the person's own preference.

Personally I don't have any use for an iPhone, iPod, or iPad, let alone
an expensive Apple Watch even when it does get its own apps.

Some people will buy one simply because it's a new toy, and they'll
have no real idea why they bought or what to use it for.

Some people will find it a very handy device with lots of uses.

Lots of companies make "smart watches" and "smart exercise bands" these
days - Samsung, Motorola, LG, and Sony to name a few. They did even
before the Apple Watch was announced, but just like the iPhone, the
Apple Watch has(slightly) pushed the boundaries of what a "smart watch"
can be used for.

Tim Cook reportedly said somewhere that the Apple Watch could be able
to replace the smart key fob many new cars use these days instead of
real keys, so just wearing the watch will enable you to open the doors,
start the car, etc. There are reportedly some companies interested in
that possibility (BMW I think was one and I wouldn't be surprised if
Nissan is as well since they adore the silly things).

Not only you car though. The Apple Watch could also be used to open
your hotel room door, pass through airport check-in kiosks, open you
house door, etc. Pretty much anything that can currently be done with a
smartcard / swipe style system.

Tim Cook said something about the Apple Watch being potentially a
replacement for car keys sometime in the future.

OK.

Why do you care? Are you saying you'd buy one if it lasted 20 hour? 22.73 hours?

Personally, I would rather have something that need daily charging than
charging every 3-4 days because something that needs to be charged every
few days seems to always be dying in the middle of a day because you
aren't used to just charging it every day.

Even my iPad, I have to try to remember to charge it every night, even
though it doesn't need it, because otherwise sometime on the second or
third day it will be at 12%

But I don't think I am buying an Apple Watch. I'll stick with my Pebble
for a while longer. Of course, things may change once the Apple Watch is
out.

Most people take off their watches to sleep?

I always did, as did the women I slept with. Size of sample still too
small to make a statistical statement, but I think the statement may be
correct. Perhaps there's a government or university study on same... :)
