By a coincidence, the latest issue of the UK MacFormat (September 2013)
magazine I got last week has this brief review of a Spotlight
replacement (it also mentions Alfred near the end) ...

Requirements: Mac OS X 10.6.8+
LaunchBar is essentially Spotlight Pro. You prod a
shortcut to bring up a search bar, type to filter
a results list, and then launch an item. But
LaunchBar goes further: you can manipulate files,
view clipboard history, use Terminal commands, and
search the web.
Along with bug fixes and improvements (notably for
Calendar and Contacts), this update brings iCloud
document indexing, Automator workflow integration,
and snippets. Automator integration is perhaps
geared towards power users, but it's simple to
create workflows that send text or file details
from LaunchBar and then return the results.
Snippets are more hit-and-miss - you can add
placeholder variables and define a cursor point,
but rich text requires manual file conversion,
and the UI is too fiddly to replace a dedicated
text-expansion tool.
Rival Alfred is friendlier and more usable, but
LaunchBar offers more for advanced users.
Verdict: A fab file search and manipulation tool -
advanced workflows will benefit from the
Automator integration.
