Played a bit with Photos yesterday. A few questions: -Is it normal one cannot drag a photo to another app (Mail or Twitter) or just me ? Is there expectation that this feature will be brought back, or has Apple decided that including photos in Mail, Twitter or any other app would be done differently ? (as done in IOS). -Is it normal that one cannot launch an external editor such as Photoshop to edit photos ? Again, is this because Photos is really a beta or alpha release and this functionality is expected to be included ? Or has Apple decided that this feature is not necessary and has no intention to bring this function into Photos ? These two functions are what I use most, so lack of them is a show stopper for me. Since I can continue to use iPhoto , this isn't a big issue, but I am concerned with the future since it is pretty obvious Apple will soon add code to prevent iPhoto from launching to force people onto Photos. Could that come with 10.11 in the fall ? Or stil lat least one more year before this could happen ? If Photos cannot fulfill my needs, I guess I have to move eventually to Bridge or Lightroom and consider how to convert my current iPhoto library to Bridge/Lightroom. ( currently have both, but Bridge used for less casual photography, while iPhoto is more for casual).

It must be you because I just dragged a photo from Photos to an open compose window in mail.app. You have to drag the thumbnail, not the opened image, though. > Is it normal that one cannot launch an external editor such as > Photoshop to edit photos ? This functionality may be included in a future version of Photos, but that doesn't mean that the current version is alpha or beta.

Dragging photos to another app works fine for me. There are some places in Photos from which you can't drag a photo, e.g. you can't drag a photo being edited, and you can't drag from the thumbnails to the left of a photo being viewed/edited. It works fine from the main Photos view (Years/Collections/Moments) or from Albums. > -Is it normal that one cannot launch an external editor such as > Photoshop to edit photos ? That is a limitation of Photos. Whether it is a temporary one due to missing features in early versions or a deliberate design choice is yet to be determined. > These two functions are what I use most, so lack of them is a show > stopper for me. Since Photos is now part of OS X, it may get updated by 10.10.4 or subsequent minor updates, or Apple might choose to release separate updates for Photos at any time. There hasn't been an update yet, so we don't know which model Apple will follow. I think it is likely that major updates will be tied to major OS X versions. If Apple is intending to add external editor support, it might be small enough that they do it in an update before the release of the next version of OS X. If that feature is important to you, then send feedback to Apple about it. If enough people do that, they may prioritise it higher. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

I am curious because I am pretty sure I would have used Mail.App since the upgrade to Yosemite on my laptop. (or maybe only Thunderbird). > That is a limitation of Photos. Would it be to conclude that lack of externmal editor support would become a "design choice" by Apple if it hasn't been added by the time 10.11 comes out in the fall ? It isn't that small a change since it requires an update to the preferences plist and dialogues. Which is why I am puzzled on why this wasn't built-in from the start. Is it possible that Photos has shared codebase with IOS so they started with the same functionality between both ?

The Twitter app not working might be a compatibility issue with the drag-and-drop metadata used by Photos, which could differ from iPhoto. Mail was updated at the same time as Photos, so it would support the new metadata. In any case, why bother using an external Twitter client, when there is a built-in Sharing feature in Photos to send a photo to Twitter? > I had not used Mail since december on tha laptop. Is it normal that > 10.10.3 required an update of the local mail database ? Some minor versions of OS X do an update of the mail database. I remember seeing one recently, probably in 10.10.2 or 10.10.3. > I am curious because I am pretty sure I would have used Mail.App since the > upgrade to Yosemite on my laptop. (or NZ spring :-) Not necessarily. It might just be delayed further. The redeveloped iWork applications had a major "regained features" burst in their first six months, and there were a few more a year after they were introduced, when they were updated for Yosemite. (Still not enough for me to seriously consider using them instead of iWork '09. The way things are going, I'll probably dump iWork completely if the old version stops working in a future OS X version.) I don't use Final Cut Pro, but my impression is that it took quite a while for version 10 to get some major features that were in FCP 7 and earlier. > > If Apple is intending to add external editor support, it might be small > > enough that they do it in an update before the release of the next > > version of OS X. > > It isn't that small a change since it requires an update to the > preferences plist and dialogues. A more important issue is the implications for the library structure and handling of the file going out and coming back, and how that fits with the way Photos manages its original and modified photos and any edit information it stores. > Is it possible that Photos has shared codebase with IOS so they started > with the same functionality between both ? Probably some bits of code are shared, but Photos on OS X has a lot more features than Photos on iOS, so that isn't relevant. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Could it be that "drag and drop" written with the new "Swift" is not compatible with older apps written in Apple's previous programming language Objective C ? > In any case, why bother using an external Twitter client, when there is > a built-in Sharing feature in Photos to send a photo to Twitter? When you enable apps to access your twitter account, it is a major security flaw that gets opened due to Twitter. Not that I don't trust Apple, but I don't agree with the principle of giving unrelated apps full access to my twitter account. And Sharing from an app may be OK to start a new tweet, but not when replying to someone. > Updates to areas like that in the user interface are minor. Which is why I suspect Apple knows full well whether they intend to support external editors since they did with iPhoto and would know exactly what is needed when achitecting the photo storage and how to handle modified images.

True. The question is when that will appear. If it only comes in OS X 10.11 then it will inconvenience people who are reluctant to upgrade their OS and who want that feature. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz
