You can of course just Hide the current application when switching to
another ... or, and here's a novel idea, simply Quit applications
you're not currently needing to use. :-)

Sure, but why? It's no faster than using Mission Control, and in some
ways inferior.

> ... or, and here's a novel idea, simply Quit applications

Why would I do that? that just means waiting for the to launch. Or
forgetting that I had something in a window I was going to check on
later.

There's almost never a reason to quit apps. The only app I run regularly
that I quit is World of Warcraft. Oh, and Garageband.

run this in the Terminal app:

defaults write com.apple.dock single-app -bool false ; killall Dock

When you select an app from the Dock, it will automatically hide all
other applications.

Good tip. This setting is also available in the lovely Secrets
preference pane (download link is at the top of the web page):

I have that preferences, but had forgotten that this feature is built
into it. I'm going to have to review all the options there again.

Nice thing is that it works only when selecting an app from the Dock.
If you do need to have two or more apps open at the same time, you can
open them from the Finder or with Spotlight.

Interesting option....

However after thinking about it for a while ... it is really no faster
or quicker than a flick of the wrist to the top right corner of the
screen and choosing the desktop.
Also my dock has a LARGE number of very small icons in it .. and finding
the right one each time would be difficult.

But a nice alternative nevertheless.

I don't follow. The top right corner of the screen is the Notification
menu.

No. I have it set (In Hot COrners in Mission Control) to open the
Mission Control along the top of the screen.

So when I flick to the Top Right Corner... a line of Spaces appears
across the top and I can see the contents of each and click on it to
move to that Space and the Application I have matched it with. And it
remembers it all after reboot.

Make the apps full screen (double arrow in the upper right).

Almost all, if not all, Apple apps work in FSM, and most (but certainly
not all) third party apps do as well.

I find FSM very useful on a laptop and less useful on the desktop, but I
do keep iTunes, iPhoto, Garageband, and Pages in FSM mode. It helps to
have multiple screens, and I use Mission Control all the time on my
desktop.

Side comment. On large screens (24, 27") iMacs, esp. with a 2nd monitor
(my case), I find that Spaces is more distraction than benefit.

My 'focus' (what I'm working on) is on the iMac screen (2 or 3 apps at a
time is typical) and the 2nd screen has ancillary stuff like mail,
newsgroups, reminders, messages, and so on - off to the side - less
distraction.

Spaces seems to me more useful on smaller, single displays.

I don't think so...

In recent years screens are cheap and video boards can easily handle at
least 2 or 3 screens. My side screen is the cheapest monitor on sale
that day that had at least 900 vertical pixels... (no colour accuracy
requirement). It's 1600x900.

Certainly for work, power users (engineers, PM's, draughtsmen,
designers, accountant/clerks) who work with a lot of data sources,
drawings and information are using 2 or 3 screens. One fellow I know
has 6 screens running all of the time (a s/w engineer / project
manager). He hates paper.

Not really.

For example, on my desktop Mac I have 3 or 4 spaces on the left (small)
screen and 5 or 6 on the main screen.

The left spaces have things like terminal, IRC, twitterrific, Messages,
maybe TextEdit. I often have Safari over there if I am using it for
reference.

The main window will contain BBEdit, iTunes, Safari (if what I'm doing
is browsing) or whatever app I am actually working in at the time.

I don't spend a lot of time positioning windows. If I find that, for
example, there's too much clutter on the screen, I'll just grab the
current app and throw it into a new space.

When I am playing games I will hav the game full screen on the iMac
screen and will switch my secondary screen between the IRC/Terminal
space and the safari space.

Different ways of working. I recently used 1 space while transferring a
lot of data between several drives. Once that activity was completed I
was back to 1 space (2 screens).

That wouldn't be efficient to my way of seeing/doing things.

The windows on my 2nd screen are carefully dimensioned and located and
stay like that for ... months. On my main screen adjusted as needed on
the fly.

To each his own...
