I've heard that argument but if you coach every game you bet on like
it's the seventh game of the world series you're not doing your team, or
baseball any favors. In a long season sometimes you have to make a
decision that might not be the best one for an individual game but do
your team a lot more good in the long haul.

It is really not that easy to follow him through the video, but e.g.
around 16:00 (or a few seconds earlier) he clearly states that at least
two of the currently heavily criticized programs aim only at terrorists.
Put that together with the fact that (at least up to that point in the
video) he only talks about terrorists they're after. Yes, he mentions
cybersecurity as well, but my understanding of his words is that the
people behind those attacks are in the end just terrorists as well.

Best regards,

Michael

He said, "We're going after terrorists with those programs". That in
no way means that he said or implied that the NSA aims only at
terrorists. He was referring to two specific programs out of many
programs that the NSA has.

They aren't 'reports' we have the buggers saying that in person.

You are mistaken in your belief that the U.S. Intelligence community
chooses its own targets. They follow directions--known as tasking--from
above.

> They should always consider the harm done if this gets public (as it now

Interesting point. It's not the alleged spying that is the problem, but
knowledge of the spying by a public that is poorly informed and naïve.
You don't seriously believe that any of the recent revelations
surprised any European leaders, do you? It's just that these things are
not discussed in polite company except when a traitor like Snowden
comes along and forces these unpleasant subjects on us.

> Or, to put it the other way around: What would you say, what would POTUS

Realistically. Suddenly every European is an expert on NSA, but knows
nothing of what his own SIGINT service is doing. You're spying on us,
you're spying on your neighbors, they're spying on you. Ho hum.

And you're still way off base on two counts: why the USG would be
interested in the private communications of your average non-terrorist
in Europe, and also the math. SIGINT processing is labor-intensive
undertaking. It is not possible to monitor large quantities of voice
communications even in English, much less another language. NSA would
need to employ the entire human population to monitor all of the
targets ascribed to it by wildly wrong press reporting.

That's what he said when the shit first hit the fan with the revelations
about what the NSA does keeping track of who calls who. I didn't
bother to keep the cite and it isnt as easy to find as the first one which

All that says is "Unlike the "second party" members (that is, the Five
Eyes themselves), "third party" partners are not automatically exempt
from intelligence targeting," with no reference to support it.

And that says "Mr Ball says Australia, the US, the UK, New Zealand and
Canada have a long-standing "five eyes" agreement to not spy on each
other, and he believes it has not been breached," again with nothing to
support it. Mr. Ball may have been mistaken.

Hardly surprising that the actual agreement

Hah! If you only knew... But you are delusional about NSA's coverage of
private citizens in Europe. Resources are limited and the legitimate
workload is unmanageably heavy.

Many of the problems the world faces today, from Islamic extremism to
the India-Pakistan debacle to international terrorism to Arab
dictatorships can be traced to decisions made by various European
regimes in the past 100 years or more. In the past 50 years the USA has
suffered more than its share of the consequences of Europe's mistakes.
That alone is reason enough to keep an eye on Europe.

In fact, I lived in S.E. Asia, the Middle East, and East Africa for 32
years, much of the time under iron-fisted dictatorships. As for the
country to which you refer, all the more reason to keep an eye (and an
ear) on the German chancellor. And the French? They definitely need
watching.

I don't claim that everybody is watched all the time - but if someone
high up the ladder chose that everybody in Germany e.g. should be
watched, the NSA would be able to do so.

> Many of the problems the world faces today, from Islamic extremism to

Many: Yes.

All: No. In fact quite many of currently pressing problems in the Middle
East have been severely influenced as well by decisions taken by the US
in the time since the end of WWII.

> In the past 50 years the USA has
> suffered more than its share of the consequences of Europe's mistakes.

And have accumulated quite a record of making things even worse - at
least in this corner of the world.

Oh, I certainly don't mind the US having an eye on Europe - just as much
as we're having (at least I hope we do) an eye on the US. But at the
very same time I say that there are boundaries to what should be done.
Or what would you (or the President) say if the German secret service
spied on him, tracing every phone call, possibly even listening to each
and every word spoken over the (mobile) phone? Breaking even encryption
used? Would you still argue so lightheartedly?

Ok, then you certainly don't mind if we started to have a very close eye
on the US president, since US presidents have a track record of lying to
the public, starting wars based on those lies, ...

No, particularly not those who never leave the house and never
