I assume it makes has no conspicuous difference, but it produces a png
file not a PICT file.

pict has been deprecated. however, the screen capture format can be
changed to any of several formats, including pict for snow leopard and
earlier.

The original (and only) option in early versions of Mac OS X was for
screenshots to be saved as PDFs ... which is annoyingly silly since
they only contain a bitmap image anyway.

it could be changed at least as far back as 10.1.

Via a command-line in Terminal? That's about as oblique as it gets for
the average user. Hell, I suppose I'd prefer a jpeg and generally trust
input from usenet, but when I see "killall" in a terminal line it does
give me the heebie-jeebies. I would think the many people I counsel on
how to work a Mac would be even less inclined to encounter it.

there are apps that wrap that all that nonsense, such as tinkertool.

<http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html>

choose the screen shot format from a popup menu and also where to put
them:
<http://www.bresink.com/osx/0TinkerTool/Images-en/3General.png>

tinkertool classic runs on 10.1.

TinkerTool Classic can set the screenshot format in 10.1, but not 10.2
or 10.3

I thought I remembered not being able to change it in one or two
releases. I recall being irked about the format Apple chose at the time.

PNG was annoying for some people because Firefox didn't support it for
some time. It is a *far* superior format to pict or tiff.

Yep. I always considered PDF to be a very strange default choice.

Mac OS X's default print format is Postscript / PDF, so it's also the
default choice for the screen capture because it basically prints the
screen.

PNG is a horrible image format that takes longer to decompress and has
bigger files than JPEG. TIFF without compression is much better,
especially for print use. Websites that insist on using PNG format
images take much longer to download and display via a dial-up
connection.

the graphics in mac os x is based on pdf, so making the screen shot use
that format was trivial.

pdf is not just printing and there is no postscript.

> PNG is a horrible image format that takes longer to decompress

nonsense.

png is lossless and jpeg is lossy.

lossless is going to be bigger than lossy.

> TIFF without compression is much better,

not necessarily, and they're much, much bigger than either png or jpeg.

> especially for print use.

no. you can't see a difference with a high quality jpeg versus tiff in
print or on screen for that matter.

> Websites that insist on using PNG format
> images take much longer to download and display via a dial-up

that's because they're bigger. however, png can do things jpegs can't,
such as transparency.

it would also be a *lot* worse if they were tif.

That may or may not be, but the average Apple customer doesn't care
about that, and would rather have something that resembles a typical
image format file.

The default screen capture image format can't actually be changed in
versions earlier than Mac OS X 10.4.

For those you don't like using the Terminal, some of the third party
applications like TinkerTool allow you to change the format (where
possible) among other "hidden" settings.

yes it most certainly can be changed.

you might try running that on 10.1-10.3.

killall just lets you see the change without logging out, it is not a
necessary step.

there are many GUI tools that will allow you to change the file format.

Ummm, you didn't notice the date of that posting, did you? Or the comments
about the date that were made in followup postings in the last month?

Cmd-Shift3 and Cmd-Shift-4 *did* create a PICT file in 1996!

BTW, I use Cmd-Shift-4 almost every day, along with Print to PDF. Those
two tools are wonderful for capturing online orders, including the steps
leading up to the final order confirmation (that last one being all that's
sent to you in confirmation emails). Just yesterday, I got a $5 refund
from a company because I found a screenshot from a month or so ago showing
that there had been a July expiration date on some promotional credit that
somehow got changed to a June expiration before I could use it. When I
sent the screenshot proving that the data was supposed to be in July, they
reinstated the credit. I also use Cmd-Shift-4 to grab screenshots from
FlightAware, the ISS High Definition Earthview experiment, etc. Very handy!

Yes, I noticed the dates referenced in the posting, but didn't look at
all interim messages that may have been in the thread over the years.

> Cmd-Shift3 and Cmd-Shift-4 *did* create a PICT file in 1996!

Did you notice that I was speaking in the present tense? I suppose it's
always wise to state it in chronological context: "During this year,
2014, the current format is..."

They are wonderful for myriad tasks: I use Cmd-Shift-4 many times every
week for half a dozen different reasons. And almost every time I point
it out, looking over the shoulder of another Mac user, they always seem
amazed that it's there.
