So what machines will be orphaned in this upcoming transmogrification?

Caveat: Apple hasn't published an official list. The Ars article is
presumably based on the first developer beta, and system requirements
may change between now and the general release.

This has happened before, e.g. Leopard's minimum CPU speed increased
during the pre-release period.

No mention of memory requirements either: if Apple was to raise the
minimum to 4 GB, some MacBook Airs with fixed 2 GB of memory would no
longer be supported.

It at least suggests that Apple is trying to keep supporting every Mac
which is supported by the current OS X version.

If the list holds, the oldest supported model (Mid 2007 MacBook Pro)
will be the new record holder: discontinued Feb 2008, will able to run
the latest OS X until at least late 2016.

The previous record holder was the Power Macintosh G3 (Blue & White),
discontinued Aug 1999 and no longer able to run the latest OS X as of
Leopard in Oct 2007.

My reaction on reading that headline was that they missed out the word
"well". Having just upgraded my late 2012 model Mac mini from the 4GB
it came with to 16GB RAM, the difference in performance is quite
stunning.

This is good news. It was frustrating to see more and more apps
disappear from reach when I was stuck on a G4 PowerBook.

It appears they will relegate more of the UI rendering to OpenCL/GL
which would free up a lot of processing time for the CPU. Claim of up
to 40% improvement. Depending on use that could boost the life of a
machine somewhat. (I wonder how Photoshop CS 5 rendering would be
affected (if at all)). Perhaps video playback will be less prone to
occasional hesitations now.

I will just continue to run my iMac 9,1 with Snow Leopard. I have no
need for any upgrades. My main machines run Scientific Linux 6.6, those
are the ones that I depend on.

I send my mail by scratching on birchbark and having the messages
delivered in cleft sticks by swift-footed Masai warriors. I only wear
socks woven from humanely-grown hemp from a Lesbian commune on
Saltspring Island. I poop in a hole in the ground.

I shave with a straight razor and sometimes write with a fountain pen.
With bottled ink too; none of this new-fangled cartridge ink nonsense.

Shave? What is this shave of which you speak?

Fountain pen? Bottled ink? If a chisel and tablet was good enough for my
forefathers, it is good enough for me.

Chisel?? Tablet?? These youngsters and their new fangled gadgets.
Finger painting on cave walls using squashed berries and animal blood
is good enough and lasts for millennia. ;-)

When I was a (much) younger man, I really did shave with straight razors
that had belonged to my grandfather. I had them sharpened by an elderly
Russian cutler (now long since gone) on Bleury Street and he sold me a
cute little strop. The ladies thought is very manly. As for the ink, my
father signed with a fountain pen his whole life; black ink.

My father did the same, and always black ink. My hairdresser (and since
he retired, his daughter) still use a cut throat razor round the ears
and the back of my neck as a finishing touch to a cut.

A lot of barbers do that. Not where I live now, but in Montreal, Tommy
on St-Viateur (a true English Canadian will pronounce that "saint
vee-ay-tur") always used to finish off with a straight razor.
