I literally had one of those untrustable farts reading the above and now
need to go change, have a shower and clean my chair.
If that's the advice the genius's are giving then it just further
confirms the opinion I have of them since the last time I got "advice"
from a pair of them!
Gotta go! (Yes I "went" - but now it's cleanup time).

The wave image was continuous, the pointer could move inside the outline, and i could even drag icons inside it where they opened programs and pictures normally, All apps were closed, left and right clicks on an assortment of View and other options from Finder menu bar and the desktop did nothing. That's not a successful application of anything - though it is at least
not as crazy as the PRAM reset...
For your issue...
Open a Finder or Pages or Number window and close again (after moving it
around on the screen; or
Finder re-start might have done it. (hold option and right click the
finder in the dock - select relaunch).
Or going to the widgets page and back (or any other workspace - or
starting a new workspace).
ie: try a few obvious things before a reboot.

Certain fixes are straighforward (such as killing dock and restarting it). But others are more nebulous. Once had my magic mouse refuse to left click. I focused on the mouse, but it turns out that the computer needed a reboot, there was nothing wrong with the mouse.

Depends. If I tell the Mac to restart, it will be at least 4 minutes or more before I'm back at my Finder screen. Putzing around, at least I can continue to download my spanking videos in the background. On the other hand, my Arch Linux laptop reboots (to X) in about 40 seconds. And ext4 journaling is so robust that it's actually faster and easier to reboot by pushing the power button. Oh oh, here comes Teh Appol Duhfense L33g. -- Where's the Vangelis music? Nothing like a fast booting system that's otherwise useless.
