Five times you posted this. You must _really_ be missing the point,
which is that Preview in the latest OS X version now includes some
functionality only accessible via trackpad. This functionality - 2D
scrolling with the 'hand' pointer being as good a term for it as any
other I've seen lately - can be replaced via vertical and horizontal
scrolling, but it is less efficient than just grabbing an image with the
hand pointer to scroll it any direction, and position it on screen just
so.

Except you can scroll with a magic mouse with two fingers on the top of

Oh, well that's fine cause everyone has a magic mouse or trackpad.
Problem solved!

So the interface world must accomodate everyone with every form of
limited input device...

...forever.

No Mac which ships with Mavericks has anything but a trackpad or a
magic mouse that comes with it.

The Magic Mouse was introduced MORE THAN 4 YEARS AGO and it's
predecessor, the Mighty Mouse was introduced MORE THAN EIGHT YEARS AGO
and it was made standard equipment on every Mac they made by October of
2005.

Scrolling has become integrated.

Deal with it.

Well since I need a _good_ mouse I guess I'm left out in the cold. You
get back to me when Apple decides to make one, ok? The last mouse of
their's I was ok - and merely ok - with using, was the puck mouse.
Before that the original ADB mouse (The ADB II model was too small for
my hands). In both those cases it was because I was too poor to afford
anything else (as a student).

This all leaves aside that there was zero good reason for removing the
grab tool - which I've been using in various apps since... I can't even
recall exactly. Decades anyway.

It is all made even sillier because the scrollwheel mouse and KB are
anything but dead, or dying off. They are still by far the preferred
input devices the world over. Hard as this may be for you to believe -
most people don't find Apple mice to be the best, or even worth keeping.
I sold my two mighty mouses on an auction site, and for virtually
nothing given all the other people trying to get rid of theirs. I mean
leaving aside the cloggable scrollball, who the hell makes a mouse you
can't lift while keeping the mouse buttons down? Only Apple...

Oh, and BTW - what is the point of saying "scrolling is integrated"? No
shit. But not _horizontal_ or 360º scrolling. Even my Logitech G500s
with it's pivoting scrollwheel is far clumsier and slower than the grab
tool. Very few mice have a touch surface or scrollball for 360º
scrolling. So again - what is your point? That because Apple offers
sub-par mice with 360º scrolling we should all have to assume every
single other mouse has decent 360º scrolling? Say that out loud to
yourself, and tell me if it makes any sense to you. Because it doesn't
to me.

Your argument that all this is ok just because Apple mice can pick up
the slack holds no water. At least not for someone who has always
preferred third party mice, doesn't like touch (and I've used trackpads
since the PowerBook introduced them), and doesn't like cloggable
scrollballs. Again - likewise many others. The only mice with decent
(and I don't mean near worthless pivoting scrollwheels) 360º scrolling I
ever see are the Apple mice.

When some kind of good 360º scrolling is near universal on third party
mice, as the scrollwheel once wasn't and now is, _then_ I'll take notice
of your rather arrogant presumption nobody and no other mouse matters.
Till then - not so much.

Of course it does. Just by using a 3rd party mouse you've put yourself

You completely missed the point. The choice of input device is
irrelevant. Drag scrolling should still be available as a software
function - there was no point at all in removing it.

Nothing.

Right. Which means that No mac which ships with Mavericks has anything
but a trackpad or a magic mouse that comes with it, since nothing is not
a thing that comes with the mini.

Not entirely. Most things go at about the right time. After the floppy
vanished, I bought a USB one that has been used less than 10 times in
the last 10 or more years. Optical has now gone, leaving a nice empty
space in my Mini for an SSD. Much more useful. And for £20 I buy a USB
DVD-everything drive from Amazon that not only does the same as the
previously built-in one, but which can be moved to SWMBO's Mini as and
when.

It may be "about the right time" for you and no doubt many other
similar people, but it's also completely the wrong time for many other
people.

not enough to justify keeping it in the product.

those who need one can buy an external unit.

those who don't (which is the majority) save money by not paying for
something they'll never use.

That trackpad is so clumsy for me that I bought a wireless mouse for my
laptop immediately and only used the trackpad away from home. Now only the
iPad travels with me.

I bought a Magic Mouse and it travels with me and my MacBook Pro...
