Smallville was fun in its first couple of seasons because it followed the Superboy comic books reasonably faithfully. Well, except for the black sidekick who knew his identity. But generally. Then it went down hill. And Kristin Kreuk is the worst Lana Lang ever. -- Where's the Vangelis music? Pris' tongue is sticking out in in the wide shot after Batty has kissed her. They have put back more tits into the Zhora dressing room scene. -- notes for Blade Runner

Helix started well. We liked > Smallville. Smallville started off okay, but quickly lost it completely when the writers ran out of sensible ideas in about season 2, ditched any remote resemblance to the Superman backstory and started pulling in characters from all over the Superman timeline for the sake of it. There's good reason it's known as "Smallvile".

One got its start during a strike in the USA and ABC bought the episodes from CTV because simply to fill time and it turned out to be not so bad. All 3 shows are done by 2 canadian networks whose purpose in life is to resell american programming, but the CRTC forces them to do at least 1 token drama in Canada per season. The problem is that they don't actually care if they are good bad, succesful or not because it is just a regulatory obligation and they would rarther they fail because they can then tell the CRTC how much of a financial burden those obligations are. The difference with flashpoint and rookie blue is that they got co-sponsorship from a US network and that changes the game. Note that plenty of series are shot in Canada. X-Files was mostly shot in canada (except for failing last years) as was the full stargate franchise (except movie). Most of Fringe was done in Canada as well. If you see US flags and US postal boxes on a street on Vancouver, it is because they are shooting something that pretends to be set in USA.

There's one at Cape Reinga (the northern-most tip of New Zealand): <http://static.panoramio.com/photos/large/29975874.jpg> and another one at Bluff (almost the southern-most tip of New Zealand): <http://www.bluff2cape.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/North_005.jpg> and others around the country in between. There's also one at the South Pole and the Antarctic station, although not many tourists get to those ones.

There's one at Cape Reinga (the northern-most tip of New > Zealand): many US movies and TV series are shot in Canada for financial reasons, and they will dress up cities to look like they are in the USA. This is quite different from tourist signs. US license plates on cars, US cop cars, US flags, US post office boxes etc. And it provides a convincing enough illusion except for the people who recognize the location.

Yep, they do that when filming here in New Zealand too. We've had a few of the Disney TV movies filming bit and pieces in our neighbourhood and they change all the street signs and have cars driving on the "wrong" side of the road while filming. (It's a pain in the backside since they close down the road and there's only one way in and out of this group of roads).

My Brooklyn Bridge sign in Old Montreal was an artifact from a movie that was being shot there. Quebeckers don't put up signs pointing outside the province ... -- Where's the Vangelis music? Proof to the contrary: http://www.vaxination.ca/temp/radisson.jpg Also, road signs near the border do point to places outside the province :-)

What, no one has mentioned "Orphan Black" yet? I haven't been watching it, but I have a couple of friends who just love it, and I know that Tatiana Maslany has been getting raves for her role(s) (including a TCA award and a Golden Globe nomination). There are also syndicated reruns in the U.S. of two of Chris Haddock's excellent series, "Da Vinci's Inquest" and "Intelligence." I enjoyed "Flashpoint." It was a cut above most cop dramas. I've also watched some of "Cracked," "Heartland," and "Murdoch Mysteries" (which airs here as "The Artful Detective"). Patty

I forgot that that's a Canadian show. It deserves all the praise it can get, and Maslany should have received an Emmy nomination, if not the Emmy itself. > There are also syndicated reruns in the U.S. of two of Chris Haddock's > excellent series, "Da Vinci's Inquest" and "Intelligence." Intelligence is a rerun of a Canadian show? I thought it was an original show.
