Y’know what’s really perplexing:Honda and Toyota back in the 80’s both
had cars that got that kind of Mileage without being hybrids. And they could
do that today.. without the weight of the batteries and electric motors..
just a gasoline engine. But they don’t because people would rather buy the
hybrid.. :-/

I don’t care one way or the other as long as I pay less for gas.

Yes, super-lightweight cars, with only two seats and no luggages space,
underpowered engines (sometimes only three cylinders), and very sparse
in the way of options. Oh, and they polluted a hell of a lot more than
today's conventional-engine cars.

Well.... everybody "knows" that there were carburetors back then that could
get 400 MPG but the oil companies bought the patents to them to keep them
off the market. This way they could sell more oil.

(Stop me if you've heard that urban myth before.)

For the purpose of his "cost analysis" it did. The divide by zero would have
been too confusing for him.

Ezekreep is making fun of a Linux advocate who made a similar
brain-fart.

Ezekreep should not throw stones from his glass house, though.
Despite having it explained to him countless times, he can't
understand why GNU-style licenses need the restirctions that they
have. He thinks that they are hypocritical because they are not
"totally free".

Ezekreep is also a shitty, shameless liar. Don't believe anything he
claims about an advocate, unless he provides an exact quote. Like all
trolls, he dishonestly twists what other people write, in order to
attack them.

Even if it did the "cost comparison" being tied to how much "better"
something is makes no sense.

If you work with images and Photoshop helps you be more efficient and do
your work better then you have to judge if that difference is worth the
difference in price, if you can afford that difference, etc.

As it is, GIMP is a great product and it is free - but it is not in the same
class as Photoshop. For me it makes Photoshop worth it - but for others this
might not be the case. Fine.

I’ve driven two hybrids.. a KIA Optima and a Prius.I’d hardly call them
“power houses” tho the KIA was a darn side better.

After getting two traffic violations which cost me 400$ in total, I
decided that I'd relax on the road and no longer go any faster than the
limit permits. I've since realized that I save about 5-6 litres per tank
doing so which also reduces my carbon emissions. I guess that's the best
that I can do until I purchase a hybrid or an electric car.

Why does anyone imagine that electric cars will ever do anything?

Certainly reducing your consumption by not being heavy footed helps,
and by anticipating the need in the few moments to slow down one can
effect that just by removing the foot from the pedal and letting the
car slow down by itself.

I'm aware and it's something that I already do. I shouldn't be getting
the incredible MPG rate I get from my Jeep Patriot I know the car very
well and know how to get the most out of it. As it is, I get about 460km
from a tank which holds about 45 litres which is slightly better than
10l/100km.

I get about 675 miles from a tank. 60 litres of diesel - which by the
way has a high energy density. Unlike a battery.

Diesel is obviously excellent for good mileage but it pollutes way more
than conventional gas does which is why it has been phased out (as far
as I know). I'd buy a diesel car but the choices are very limited.

Well, you don't know anything. That much is clear

Page 19 clearly shows that diesel gets much better mileage than gas
vehicles. It mentions a lot about clean diesel vehicles but what I've
been told is that while it doesn't emit as much as conventional gas, the
kind of emission is more toxic. Of course, I haven't gone too deep into
the research.

From what I understand, with *no* research, is diesel emits a lot more
particulates (and, I think, some other pollutants).

Still, biodiesel sounds interesting though I am not sure I want cities
smelling like French fries. :)

For this reason modern diesel cars have filters in the exhaust.
And because of this, diesel cars should not be used for short distances
only, otherwise those filters could clog. The particles, if not filtered,
can cause lung problems because they are small enough to get deep into the
lungs

biodiesel does not mean that it works and smells differently, just that the
source of the diesel isn't crude oil

That smell you mention is present if you run the diesel engine on vegetable
oil directly (several diesel engines can do that)
