Most iPad users don't know most free apps available that would be
variously useful to some or even most people.

Are you sure that's part of OS X?

I'm not sure about the latest version, but Microsloth Office used to
install a few "hidden" applications that were meant to be only used
from with the Office applications - one of them used to be called
Microsoft Graph.

Have a look in /System/Library/CoreServices. All sorts of stuff. I found
one called Certificate Assistant (a digital certificate creator) that I
don't remember ever seeing before.

Many of these are accessed in via other means.

The archiver is invoked when you select items in the Finder and then
choose, "Compress <something>" from the File menu.

The Certificate Assistant... ...from within Keychain Access.

Etc.

It will be the same one that is run when you choose the archiving
option fomr the contextual menu when right-clicking on a file /
selected groups of files.

There aren't many "hidden" applications. Most are simply ones that the
average user never notices as an "application" even though they may use
them often.
