I was sure that Juno was Canadian. I mean, I know Ellen Page and Michael Cera are and the Jason Bateman was born practically in Canadia, but I also thought the movie was shot in Canada and largely made in Canada. Oh, and Juno's dad was born like 2 miles from Canada. Oh look, it was filmed in Canada, but is still considered a US production. I dunno, the two main stars are Canadian and the movie is shot in Canada and there is certainly a Canadian "feel" to the movie, though I couldn't possibly tell you what that is. Maybe Juno's van has Ontario plates or something. How about Scott Pilgrim? That was supposed to be Canadian. -- Chico: You sing-a high. Connie: Yes, I have a falsetto voice. I hate this word buff. Just because I like opera and even stage-managed a few productions in California, I must be an "opera buff". Likewise because I've seen a film or two, I'm obliged to be a "film buff". You're on "Punishment Planet" for calling some pretty good movies staring a pretty good actor "rubbish". To people all over the world, some of the films (if not all) you mention are not obscurely parochial. About films, almost all are complete crap. That leaves quite a few over many decades that are not. Like what I hear you ask? Good question and thanks for thinking that. In no particular order: A Big Country (Gregory Peck) Witness (directed by Weir) 42nd Street (1933) Unforgiven (Eastwood) The Bridges of Madison County (1995) Pale Rider (Eastwood) Gran Torino Million Dollar Baby (the first three quarters of it). High Plains Drifter Dirty Harry (high art Tim, you have to understand it deeply to see this on this one) A Prairie Home Companion (Meryl Streep) Heartburn Plenty Falling in Love Sophie's Choice More later as you are obviously really keen to know. Good for you about Opera, it is a lot of fun and more. Just a short ferry ride across Sydney harbour from me at the Opera House, have seen quite a few in the last year and a half. It has made me think my old England maybe is very different to my relatively new Australia (I have been here over 55 years - I am so old that it is almost funny). Maybe films are distributed differently there. But you would have video shops (not that there were such things when I was there - I did see the Queen's coronation on a new oval TV screen in a massive cabinet in Manchester in 1952) > > About films, almost all are complete crap. In fact, let me add a few now: A Big Country (Gregory Peck) Witness (directed by Weir) 42nd Street (1933) Unforgiven (Eastwood) The Bridges of Madison County (1995) Pale Rider (Eastwood) Gran Torino Million Dollar Baby (the first three quarters of it). (I cannot get into my IMBD account any more because I have changed my email address and may not have set a security question... so now I have to reconstruct my list again of my favourites. They are mostly films I have seen over and over again. Witness, I have watched over 25 times. Unforgiven, many many times and 42nd St, it never ceases to entertain. Don't tell me he played Streep!
(Great movie, by the way - and he played himself - DVD has some good
stuff on the band).
Even the trailer is great.

He's been one of my favourite actors for years. I think I first saw him in that "Mr Ripley" thing with Jude Law. He was a fine actor, and never ran off to foreign shores to adopt children. I actually thought he was older than 46. -- Where's the Vangelis music? Pris' tongue is sticking out in in the wide shot after Batty has kissed her. When I were a lad in Wales (mid-fifties-ish), we went to "the pictures." There were Saturday morning matinees. You could buy sweets four-for-a-penny but you had to buy at least two because the shops had stopped taking farthings by then, which was sad because my Mam had a whole bowl of them.
