His portrayal of Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Catching
Fire was spot on; I read the trilogy shortly before seeing that movie,
and he played the character exactly as he was written. So unless his
personality was the same as the character's, it is a testament to his
acting ability.

There's been about three articles (so far) in the local newspaper over
the last two days about the guy and his drug addiction, plus this
letter to the editor in yesterday's edition ...

     On suicide
Another "acting great" has hit the headlines by
killing himself. Is that stupid and irresponsible
event really worthy of comment? He could have got
a real job. He could have kept well away from
pumping crap into his veins. He could have been a
good role model. Instead, he chose to be an idiot,
     and a total loser.

It may or may not be "newsworthy" that yet another celebrity idiot
(minor or otherwise) killed himself, but it's certainly not newsworthy
enough to justify the amount of "journalist" attention being given to
it ... no doubt it's simply been a slow news week.

It would be informative to know whether a certain class of actor feels
that it needs to be high in order to be a good actor.

Use of drugs by Hollywood celebrities is not new and unfortunatly not
isolated. Is this just a case of a side effect of being rich and famous,
or is is it an integral part of being a certain type of actor ?

Both. There are lots of rich and famous non-actors and wannabe
celebrities who booze and drug themselves stupid (or "stupider").

Of course you don't have to be rich nor famous, there's also plenty of
"ordinary" people stupidly doing the same thing.

Personally I couldn't care less what people do to themselves, but this
latest fool certainly is not worth yet another article in today's
newspaper. :-\

It is a mark of the right-wing moronic type that they accuse people
they disapprove of, *choosing* to do things - when this term is not at
all appropriate (does not mean any opposite term is either).

Your Name does not choose to be the schmuck he is, the sympathetic
theory is that this poor bastard can't help it.

+1

I have no use for lousy actors who are more celebrities than actors,
but good actors enrich our world.

We just send you the rubbish.

The good stuff doesn't do well enough on the overseas market to get
into theaters. This list includes lots of good movies (and some
rubbish too, to be fair, but Hoffman is great even in the rubbish).

It's only fair I s'pose, since New Zealand lets you make some of the
rubbish here (Power Rangers until recently, many of the Disney
TV-movies) and sends you NZ-made garbage (The Almighty Johnsons,
Outrageous Fortune, Flight of the Concords).

Although, I must sayd the 90zillionth repeat-from-the-start of Friends
and Home Improvement is getting a bit monotonous and more than adequate
payback.

Is there recent NZ TV/movies that you think are good? Beside Top of

Recent?!? There's nothing made in New Zealand that's any good ... I
have never seen them, but even The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit
movies apparently screw over the books (as usual with Hollyweird
"adaptations").

Yikes. If we have to go back 20 years to find something, then they
need to stop complaining that we're sending our stuff (at least _some_
of which is good) over there.

I'll call your Heavenly Creatures and raise you 10 years with "Smash
Palace." (Early 80s.)

Fair enough. But, small places like NZ and Canada don't make good movies
very often. I know nothing of the movie business in NZ, but Canada's is
hampered by greed and the [spit] CRTC -- we get dozens of cookie-cutter
cable-tv movies where the male actors look like they stepped out of and
Eaton's catalogue and the women all look like Kristen Kreuk and the
scripts were written by those monkeys we've all heard about and they
were all directed by someone's brother-in-law. The most creative work is
done by the electrical crew.

I'd have to go back 40 years to find a good Canadian picture that stands
up. Duddy Kravitz.

Here's one problem: a Canadian script is written once by someone's
brother-in-law, and funded and shot. In the US they go through like 40
rewrites before anyone turns a camera on.

There are quite a number very good of made-in-Canada TV series that are
shown in the USA, especially on the SyFy network Two that come to mind
are Lost Girl and Bitten. (The latter is based on Kelly Armstron's
"Women of the Underworld" series of novels.)

We tried to watch Bitten (it just started) and we found it ridiculous.
Lost Girl has its moments, I guess. Helix started well. We liked
Smallville.
