"Owning Mahoney" is perhaps most on-point with respect to addiction... I
didn't find it "depressing". More of a social autopsy.

Ides ... very good.

Then I'm envcious of you since you have the pleasure available of
seeing some of these (I really liked Magnolia, Almost Famous and The
Master) for the first time.

Hoffman was a great actor. Addiction is a horrific illness that
leaves terrible devastation in its wake.

Capote is a must see for various reasons including historical - and
Hoffman's acting. If you've ever read "In Cold Blood" (and if you
haven't, it is well worth the read...) then the movie Capote is the
essential companion. ("To Kill a Mockingbird" references as well).

"Patch Adams" is a good/fun movie as well (central role is Robin Williams).

I really didn't get into The Big Lebowski. Just didn't click with me.

Moneyball's a fun movie. Indeed I suspect the principle applies in some
degree to the Superbowl disaster of this past Sunday.

There are several in that list that I do want to see...

These must be rubbish American movies that don't make it over here.
I've heard of perhaps one of these.

Well he's had none here.

Moneyball, Capote, Punch-drunk Love, Almost Famous, Magnolia, and The
Big Lebowski, at least, are all excellent movies. I liked Scent of a
Woman a lot at the time, but less when I saw it a few years later,
though it has some spectacularly good performances.

I've heard of most of those movies, but have never had any interest in
bothering to watch any of them, even when the older ones arrived on TV
for free.

Like most minor celebrities, he's really only attained "notoriety" for
killing himself with drugs, at which point all the idiot "journalists"
start saying what a pity because he was so great. :-\

Hardly minor. Hoffman was a very fine actor (stage and screen) who took
on difficult and unusual roles. Earning a Best Actor Academy Award
playing an iconic figure in a low budget movie is not something seen often.

His spook, Avakadros (sp?) in "Charlie Wilson's War" was deadpan
brilliant. Many others.

But of course anything you're ignorant about is not worth any
consideration. That's one hell of a blind spot and explains other
"positions" you've taken.

Oh hell, I completely forgot that was him. Another movie worth seeing
just for his performance. He was nominated for an Oscar for that role as
well, but lost out to Javier Bardan (sp?) who gave the year's creepiest
performance in No Country For Old Men.

It also has the wonderful Amy Adams. I think that was the first movie I
saw her in, though I didn't know who she was.

Bardam was great - no doubt about it.

The scene where she's walking the corridors and her perky pony tail
swinging had to have been redone about 20 times. Probably started as an
accident when they spotted the effect re-did it until they found maximum
resonance.
Of course! I'm not the only fan of that scene:

She was pretty good in Julie and Julia as well.

But the office staff was my treat! ;-)

I've never seen Hoffman outside a movie. But within movies, he had a
certain attitude I disliked (a certain snob, swaggart aspect) , and I
based my opinion of the actor based on what I saw on screen.

But it was never clear to me whether I was seeing Hoffman, whose normal
personality fitted exactly what was needed for the part (and thus not
truly acting), or whether he was such a good actor that I was wrongly
convinced I was seeing the actor's personality through the role he was
playing (which would be the definition of a great actor)

But i still have the impression that his role in Taletend Ripley was
representative of his real personality.

That's a mistake.

What they do is called "acting" because they are pretending to be the
character who they are portraying.

It is true that there are some famous "actors" whose schtick involves
just walking through their roles being themselves. Hoffman was not
one of these and his roles are incredibly varied.

I'm not sure what you've seen, but he has had many roles where "snob"
and "swaggart" don't apply in the least. You could maybe apply those
to his role in Charlie Wilson's war, but not to his role p
