Considering the amount of notoriety he's had, including an Oscar, anyone who's never heard of him isn't much of a movie watcher. -- If you could do a sort of relief map of sinfulness, wickedness and all-round immorality, rather like those representations of the gravitational field around a Black Hole, then even in Ankh-Morpork the Shades would be represented by a shaft. In fact the Shades was remarkably like the aforesaid well-known astrological phenomenon: it had a certain strong attraction, no light escaped from it, and it could indeed become a gateway to another world. Someone who watches movies, but does not read the Hollywood gossip sheets or news articles isn't much of a movie watcher?

Actually, I don't have the time (nor the money) to see all the movies I want to see. I have to prioritize. The actors involved rarely are a first or second cut priority.

You are right. The presence of famous actors is a very poor indication of the quality of a movie. I used to think director was more reliable (am not so sure these days!) -- dorayme

Someone who has "never heard" of a major category oscar winner? Yeah, not much of a movie watcher. I couldn't name every best actor/actress/ picture winner, but I bet I've heard of every single on of them in the last 60 years or so, and possibly much further back (and I am well under 60 years old). > Someone who watches movies, but does not read the Hollywood gossip > sheets or news articles isn't much of a movie watcher? I've never read a Hollywood gossip sheet, nor do I read "entertainment" related news. I don't know who is married to whom (with very few exceptions. I know Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were a couple and Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes and Harrison Ford and Calista Flockheart, that's about all I know. Oh, and Bogart and Bacall, of course). I don't even watch the Oscars, finding I can get the information I want in 15-20 seconds after the show rather than spend 4 hours of tedium watching it. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Actor> Going back, the first one whose name I don't recognize is Broderick Crawford in 1949. On the best Actress list there are at least three from 1949 on that I wouldn't recognize (Anna Mangani, Simone Signoret, Lousie Fletcher) by name alone. I may have missed one or two in the scan. Of course, is someone said "Nurse Ratchet" instead of Louise Fletcher then I'd know who they were talking about. -- Passion is the pill you can swallow forever Taking them one by one One by One --Agents of Good Roots "Come On"

A north american human being living in a city cannot NOT know about those. For survival, such a human being must get food at a supermarket, and while waiting to pay for said food, the human being is forced to see the covers of various magazines that follow every movement of certain couples. So yeah, I know about the Pitt/Jolie/Aniston threesomes, the mudwrestling matches between Aniston and Jolie because they allegedly hate each other etc etc. (translation: their agents see a means to get their actor,s face in front pages which raises their profile and prevents them from fading into being forgotten) Note that Ford and Flockheart are not generally seen in the grocery store checkout magazine covers, so I don't really know what is happening to them. And the Pitt/Aniston/Jolie fights seem to have gone away once Aniston's agent realised it wasn't doing Aniston's image any good to be seen as jealous of Pitt having left her to go with Angelina Jolie.
