That wasn't clear. To me, it seemed as though you were referring to
Windows. And from mr.know-it-all's response, he thought so too -
otherwise he would have said so.

Though I'd try to find a copy of Win7, myself. Win7 is easily the best
OS Microsoft have released since Win95, and feels quite OSXish ;-)
Frankly I'd take even fully patched Vista over Win8, any day of the
week. I HATE Win8's new touchified UI on the desktop (I find it ok on
Windows Phones). You guys thought I was unimpressed with the minor
touchification of OSX 10.7+ on the desktop. My displeasure over that is
_nothing_ compared to my dislike of Win8's new UI.

WinXP still works fine, of course, and would be quite safe in a VM used
by any security aware user. MS official patches may have ended for XP,
but it hasn't simply stopped working. I wouldn't let kids and the
clueless lose in XP downloading and visiting everywhere online under the
sun. But any of the regulars here would be more than capable of using XP
safely, or any earlier unsupported version of Windows, for that matter.

Also - if XP or any VMed OS was compromised, assuming you've been
backing up, it's simplicity itself to revert to the earlier backed up
state.

You mean "unlawful"? It's suddenly become unlawful to download
software from the website of the company that sells it? Or from places
like Digital River? When the fuck did that happen?
And, fuck me, am I in *trouble*? I've been downloading Antivirus,
firewall, antimalware and other programs for *decades*! How much
trouble, exactly, am I in?

 Yes, that *was* sarcasm.

if they're selling it, then you have to *pay* for it. otherwise, it's
illegal.

there may be a trial version to help you decide if you should
ultimately buy it but that's not always the case.

very simple, really.

potentially, a shitload, assuming what you've downloaded was not free,
and if you've been doing it for decades, then there's a very high
likelihood that some of it is.

chances are you won't get caught, but that doesn't make it ok.

He's the idiot who was trying to tell me that I had done something illegal
by buying a perfectly legitimate OEM version of Windows.

Does he think he's the Microsoft Police or something?

As best as I can determine, it comes only on optical media.

Well, there's also this:

<https://torrentz.eu/6e945daab6860265f3695300bf97a06dffe41e1a>

Not exactly legal, though. And maybe not safe.

if I had a PC, I wouldn't need to run it on my Mac.

No, you can download it:

We're talking about Bridge Master 2000, not about Windows.

I wouldn't Torrent software, but I'm quite paranoid about computer
security.
There *are* legitimate Torrents out there, many Unixxxy site use the
protocol to pass around large distros, but you are quite wise to be
suspicious of any random one.

Not entirely true. You may have had a dusty old relic PC that you use
once in a decade for those exceedingly few things your nice Mac can't
do. I was thinking of something like that. Many Mac users keep Windows
boxes for emergencies, I wondered if you did.
You can buy one, a small, crappy laptop, for less than the cost of a
full Windows licence if you shop around. It won't be fun to work on
but it might be useful for those rare events.

Every computer I've ever owned, starting in October 1978, has been an
Apple product.

A friend suggested a Chromebook just for Bridge Master 2000. I'm
trying to avoid getting another piece of hardware, but I may look into
it.

You've just said you own a copy of CrossOver Mac, and you're
contemplating getting another piece of hardware before you've even

YOU ALREADY HAVE CROSSOVER!

You don't need to "consider" anything to try it out and see how it works.

You've wasted more time on this argument than the whole exercise would
have taken.

You have been the time waster with your inability or refusal to
understand simple written English.

Oh, and there's still the problem of getting the software onto my
