My 2¢: VMware has been around a lot longer, and has better customer
support and so on. In the early days, the robustness and performance of
Parallels Desktop was nowhere near as good as VMware Fusion, but that
leveled off for the most part. I've bounced around between the two
several times during the years, and have been using Fusion for the past
few years because Parallels Desktop just hasn't given me enough reason
to move to it lately.

I run VMWare Fusion on this Mac for those times (fewer, & fewer now) I
find a need to run a Windows application. I can fire it up in a
separate space (desktop) to where I might have other OSX apps running.
That is far less hassle than having to reboot into Boot Camp. I got a
good deal on Fusion some years ago in one of thos software bundles that
materialize from tome to time.
Moving between OSX and Windows desktops is a mouse click away. When i
am done I quit Windows, & Fusion and that is that, no OSX reboot
required.

...and Windows functions as annoyingly as it did when I had to use it
at work before I retired, so for me it is a perfect reminder of why my
OS preference lies with Apple.

Oh. I thought you meant that compared to Parallels Desktop.

I have never had a great desire or need to run Windows at home, so
getting Fusion in that bundle was fortuitous, and I bought an OEM
version of XP Pro + SP2. It runs without hiccough, and I have never had
a need to even consider Parallels let alone test drive it. While Boot
Camp probably give you the best environment in which to operate Windows
on a Mac, I find Fusion simple and convenient.

I got Parallels as part of a bundle, so have used it for a couple of
years. Their upgrade policy and pricing I find pretty abhorrent,
especially since they force you to "upgrade" to fix compatibility
issues.

I won't be upgrading Parallels. If I need to run Windows int eh future,
I'll go with BootCamp or VirtualBox.

I am still running VMWare Fusion v. 4.1.3 and it runs as well on OSX
10.9.4 as it did on 10.6.8. I get the upgrade nag, but that take no
effort at all to ignore.
Having Windows available to me is not that important in my life, now
that I have retired.

yeah, Parallels breaks. 6 broke with a system update and so did 7. I'm
still running 8 under 10.9, but I don't expect it to work in 10.10.

I seem to recall that one of the broken Parallels appeared to be an
intentionally breakage, but the details are hazy so I may be
misremembering.

My wife's Parallels-version-3 broke when I upgraded her MacBook to
Snow Leopard. I think that was intentional on the part of both
companies. The version currently on offer won't download to the PC
because SL is too old a system. Or maybe because my "App Store" app is
too old. Or maybe *I* am too old.
I think I could get an intermediate version to run but there never
seemed to be any point to it. As I may have mentioned up thread a few
times, CrossOver does everything we needed Windows emulation for and
it's easier to use than WINE.

[Yes, nospam, I know it's just a WINE wrapper, give it a rest.]

going to pay for it.] {Arrrrrr, Jumm, lard, heave ho me hartees.]

WINE / Crossover is such useless garbage that it's not worth paying for
... it's not even worth wasting time with for free since it doesn't
even work properly with most (if not all) of the so-called "supported"
Windoze applications. If you want proper Windoze compatibility, then
you *have* to install Windoze.

It tends to be a matter of personal preference these days with little
real difference between Fusion and Parallels.

Bootcamp, Parallels, and VMWare require a licensed Windows version, so,
"best" is crossover if cost is what matters most.

If compatibility matters most, then Bootcamp.

Convenience? Either Parallels or VMWare.

Depending on how well it works; it rated only a silver, and that was
from only one reviewer.

The question about tradeoffs remains.

Look at the CrossOver compatibility page for the application in
question. If it's not 100% compatible, then purchasing CrossOver may be
a risk for you. The choice between VMware Fusion and Parallels Desktop
is really up to you, since they are both relatively equal in terms of
performance, compatibility, and features. That said, I will tell you
that VMware has been in this business much longer and tends to have
better support, IME. And then there's VirtualBox, which is free, but
harder to set up, and I have no idea what sort of support is available
for it.

What's the question?

I've already written that I already have a purchased copy of CrossOver.
That makes CrossOver my least expensive option. And if it doesn't
work, I can still get Windows and use Boot Camp or buy VMware Fusion or
Parallels Desktop. I just need to decide whether it's worth trying
CrossOver first.

That's the first time that anyone in this thread has compared the two.
Thanks.

Anyway, I think I've received all the information I'm going to get in
this thread.

Considering that only one person has reported trying it, that might be
a sign that it's not worth using it.

But I will probably try it first anyway.
