Message-ID<040720141039476963%otto@bogus.address.com>
My mid-2011 MacBook Air seems to take about 15 seconds to shut down
after I applied the 10.9.4 update. The boot time is about 15 seconds as
well. A tad bit slower than before the update but the shutdown is
noticeably longer. I usually quit all applications before shutting down
and empty the trash if there is any. The only service I leave on is
WiFi. Has anybody else experienced this? Something I need to check or
disable that was installed with the update. I also haven't updated or
added any new applications since the update. Thanks.

Try this:

1. Make note of the current time.
2. Perform a shutdown and wait for it to complete.
3. Make note of the time again.
4. Start the computer.
5. Take a look at the console and system logs, and make note of any
messages that have a time stamp between the two times you noted above.

The system log will usually give you an indication as to what is causing
startup and low-level issues, where the console log typically shows only
issues you experience after you are logged into your user account.

Feel free to post *relevant portions* (only entries that are time
stamped around the time of the occurrence) of the logs here if you need
help understanding them. We'll be glad to take a look and tell you what
we see.

To view logs on your computer, open /Applications/Utilities/Console.

NOTE: You cannot use the Console application to view the system log from
a non-administrative account. Instead, do this:

1. Quit Console.
2. Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.
3. In a terminal window, enter the command (replacing "admin" with the
short name of an administrator account): su admin
4. Supply the password to the admin account when prompted.
5. Enter the command: sudo open /Applications/Utilities/Console.app
6. Supply the password to the admin account when prompted.

If you enter these commands correctly, Console will open in
administrator mode, allowing you to view the system log.

Thanks. I looked at the Console and System logs and there aren't any
time stamps between the two times: SHUT_DOWN TIME 12:27, BOOT_TIME
13:06 on either log.

It's the entries before

  7/4/14 14:18:17.623 shutdown[13085]: SHUTDOWN_TIME: 1404508697 622465

that are of interest...

You should also check the launchd-shutdown.system.log (click the /var/log
disclosure triangle, then click the same for com.apple.lanuchd) - lots of
data there, but you'll see entries like this...

3166615 com.apple.launchd 1 com.apple.metadata.mds.index 153
Exited 3.144808 seconds after the first signal was sent

...that do not, as far as I can see, appear in the system log.

I do know you'll clearly see any delays, although they don't
remain on the screen for very long, using the verbose mode.

You didn't follow my instructions. You are supposed to note the time
*before* you shut down, and then look for log messages from that time
forward until the time you started up.

My apologies for my lack of understanding. I just jotted down the time
I shutdown, waited for an interval, and the rebooted.

Ok, I'll go and look at the log now, note the entries at that time
(maybe cut and paste to Word), and then shutdown?

First of all, thanks for your help. I have a .doc file of before and
after shutdown. It's rather large and I don't know how much of it I
should post. What am I, or you guys, looking for?

We are looking for only the log messages *between* the time you told the
computer to shut down and when it actually did shut down. I figured that
was obvious from my instructions, but I guess not. If you follow my
directions precisely, you shouldn't have very many messages to post
here:

1. Make note of the current time.
2. Perform a shutdown and wait for it to complete.
3. Make note of the time again.
4. Start the computer.
5. Take a look at the console and system logs, and make note
of any messages that have a time stamp *between* the two times you
noted above.

Thanks for your patience. I followed your instructions and copied all
of the Console System logs between the time I told the Air to shutdown
(using my watch to mark the exact time) and when it actually shutdown,
to a Word .doc. It's 70kb.

How many lines is it? It shouldn't be more than a handful.

Post the lines here.

It's 10 pages of a Word .doc.

Wow. Are a lot of messages repeated or something? How much time expired
between the time you selected apple menu > Shut Down and the time the
computer actually finished shutting down? In other words, what's the
time stamp of the very first message, and what's the time stamp of the
very last message?

Anyhow, feel free to post the messages here.

I repeated the steps again this morning. This time, the shutdown
process took about 12 seconds, which is still slower than before the
10.9.4 update. I've properly captured the system log info this time (I
highlighted too much yesterday) so the .doc file is only 37kb and about
a page and a half long. I'll attach it here.

That's won't work since this news group does not accept attachments
(binaries). Don't bother messing around with a Word document. Just copy
the messages from the log file, and paste them directly into a reply
here. Done deal.

Notice the ten-second time delta between the message above and the
message below.

What this is saying is that the loginwindow process is unable to
gracefully kill the console process (sessionlogoutd[361]: DEAD_PROCESS:
65 console). Unfortunately, it doesn't tell us *why* this is happening.

You may be able to glean more details about the problem by running
/Applications/Utilities/Console, clicking "All Messages" in the side bar
on the left side, and searching for "loginwindow", "sessionslogoutd", or
"console". Feel free to post any relevant messages you find (don't
bother pasting lines that get repeated so we don't have to wade through
too much noise).

Since the issue has to do with a process not quitting properly, it might
be nice to know if the problem remains if you quit all running
applications *before* shutting down. If the problem goes away, then one
of those applications may be the culprit.

It could also be related to a device you have connected to the computer.
Another thing you might try is disconnecting any non-essential USB,
Firewire, or Thunderbolt devices from the computer to see if the delay
disappears. If so, that's a clue that the issue may be caused by a
driver or hardware malfunction of something that is connected to the
computer.

It would also be handy to know if the problem happens when you create a
brand-new Mac OS X user account and shut down while logged into that
account. If not, the problem is likely due to a setting in your user
account.

This is what I came up with which I believe is the same time frame that
I posted above:

I don't usually keep anything physically connected to my Air unless I'm
transferring files, etc. Otherwise it's just the Air by itself. What's
odd is that with 10.9.3, shutdown time was almost instantaneous. I
always quit all applications and empty the trash before quitting.

Yeah, those are the same messages.

Ok, good - so it's probably not related to anything you had physically
connected.

Does the problem occur if you create a brand-new Mac OS X user account,
log into it, and shut down from there? If not, we know the problem is
isolated to your user account.

Try booting in Safe Mode (link to instructions below) and then shutting
down. Does the problem remain?

Another thing to try is temporarily disabling login items (also described
in the link below) to see if the problem remains.

Wow. I booted in Safe Mode (it said so at the top). Held down the Power
button until the Shutdown dialog box appeared, released the Power
button and hit Return. Nothing happened for about 95 seconds (no
Shutdown) so I got concerned, pressed the Power button again for about
3-5 seconds and it Shutdown. It seems to be a lot worse when booting
into Safe Mode, unless I screwed something up.
