#61742 — Windows application on a Mac

FromMichelle Steiner <michelle@michelle.org>

SubjectWindows application on a Mac
Message-ID<040720140949213663%michelle@michelle.org>
I've pretty much been ignoring this topic, but now I have a strong
desire to run an application (BridgeMaster 2000, if you're curious)
that runs only on Windows.

What would be my best option: Boot Camp, Parallels, VMware Fusion,
Crossover?

I know that the biggest disadvantage for running Boot Camp is that I'd
have to reboot the computer every time I want to switch between OSes.
And both Parallels and Fusion cost extra money. I have Crossover
because it came in one of those bundles that are sometimes offered, so
price isn't a problem with it, but I'm all that convinced that it would
be the best way to go.

crossover probably won't work but if it does, it's the cheapest option.
a lot of apps don't work with it, but maybe you'll luck out. if you
already have it then it might be worth trying.

otherwise, you are aware of the differences between vmware/parallels
versus boot camp. you'll need windows for either opion, plus the cost
of vmware/parallels if you choose that path.

If/When I get the software, that's what I'll probably try first.

yes, but that's not enough information for me to decide.

And, I just realized, I'd have to get an external DVD/CD drive to
install the software.

Only if it comes on DVD. You could use a USB stick. Or download it
from them, there Interewbs.
Even if it does come on a silver disc, you could pop it on a PC and
send it across to the real computer as an ISO.

Yep. At my previous employer, IT distributed ISO images of Windows
installers, and you could just point the VM to the disk image to install
a new OS.

Or create the disk image on your Mac, even.

I've been doing that for several years now. If you have Windows, ImageBurn
(free) is excellent for creating images from optical media.

This could be an option for Michelle if she knows someone nearby with
a Windows system to do that.

Note: You don't need any third-party utilities. Simply open Disk
Utility and create an image of the Windows install disc. Done deal!

Yes, but only if you have an optical disk drive connected to your Mac :-)

You need access to the optical media whether you use ImageBurn or
Disk Utility. Disk Utility is built into Mac OS X - no third-party
utility is needed on Mac OS X.

mr.know-it-all loves to make ignorant blanket statements like this, and
is often wrong - though he'll never admit it, and will argue until the
end of time that he is right despite all evidence to the contrary - it's
his modus operandi

Here are microsoft's official, legal pages for purchasing downloadable
copies of windows:

Windows 8:
<http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Windows-8.1/productID.288401200>

Windows 8 Pro:

of course you can buy it online. that's well known.

he was clearly talking about pirating it.

he didn't say 'buy it online' did he? nope. he didn't.

if he meant purchase it legally, he'd have said 'you can buy it online
directly from microsoft.'

nope, you inferred it - nothing in his statement implies he is
advocating pirating software

then he'd have said buy a copy online directly rather than a vague
'download it from them there interwebs'.

his other posts clearly indicate he has no problems with piracy.

Then he's lying, because he claims he was not talking about pirating it.

You have never heard of the free version of anti-virusware? Or of
shareware, crippleware or trialware? You have never gone to
Microsoft's site and seen the 14-day, 90-day or 30-day trial offers?
You have never, ever, in your entire use of your WebTV device seen any
free updates, free patches, free extensions or free offers of any
sort? No bundles? No "buy this get that free"?
You have honestly never seen anything on the Internet that the
software companies *WANT* you to take without giving them money? Not
even the five thousand million distros of Unix-like stuff and all of
the programs, applications and apps that come with them?
Fuck, boy, you have lead a sheltered life.
But I suppose that's what you get when you are a pre-teen in a secure
unit. Lack-witted wassoch.

>
>his other posts clearly indicate he has no problems with piracy.

I have *great* problems with "piracy", I also don't steal, thieve or
violate copyright.
I've been on ships, boats and rubber flotation devices, piracy would
upset me a lot. It would even upset me if it happened on an aeroplane
I was using.
 Idiot.

"Piracy" is the act of invading a ship unlawfully with intent to do
unlawful stuff. What you are talking about is either copyright
violation or simple theft.
 And no, numbnuts, I wasn't.

>
>he didn't say 'buy it online' did he? nope. he didn't.

I have *OFTEN* downloaded stuff from the Internet without paying a
single penny to the suppliers. Many sites *ENCOURAGE* this. If you are
too stupid to have found one, out of the millions available, I pity
you.

>
>if he meant purchase it legally, he'd have said 'you can buy it online
>directly from microsoft.'

No, I wouldn't have. I would have said "download it". If the OP then
wanted to buy it that is a choice. Deleting the software without using
it is another. Using it for a test period is a third, to find out if
she likes it and can use it. I have often found that programs are much
unlike their descriptions and do not do what I need from them, these I
do not buy though I may have tested them.
If you have never done any of these you are not much of an expert in
these matters and you should keep your hands away from the keyboard
until you at least grow some body hair and perhaps a little experience
and wisdom, boy.

And I wasn't talking about any Microsoft product, nor, I assumed was
the OP, I thought we were discussing her intended purchase, the thing
she needed a Windows emulator for.
Not that that is at all relevant as "download from the Internet" can
also be applied to much Microsoft software, as you would know were you
to climb down from your religious hatred of the company long enough to
scan their sites.
Not that I expect a child like you to be able to do that.
                                                           J.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if he admits he was wrong - even more if he
