I think you'll find the correct term is "Motion Picture Theatre". ;-)

Although these days it's more likely to be "over-priced cineplex". :-(

Actually, I still say that a lot, maybe even the majority of the time.
I am told, they would say that in Australia too in the 50's.

In Didsbury, Manchester, it was literally afternoons ("matinée"
meaning this, of course).

We would buy small round sweets to roll down the aisles or stalls
(they sloped slightly), now and then take the bus "punched holes" to
sprinkle from the balcony over the stalls.

Some kids would be much naughtier, stooping to sprinkling pepper to
delight in the ensuing coughing and spluttering in the stalls. Others
would commit almost terrorist acts, stink bombs!

To think, now I find it outrageous if someone opens their crinkly
wrappers on lollies. <g>

To be pedantic,

matinee |ˈmatɪneɪ|
noun
an afternoon performance in a theatre or cinema.
ORIGIN mid 19th cent.: from French matinée, literally ‘morning (as a period
of activity)’, from matin ‘morning’: performances were formerly also in the
morning.

However, en français:

matinée
nom féminin
1 Période de temps comprise entre le lever du soleil et midi.: Une froide
matinée. SYNONYME avant-midi.
2 Représentation d’un spectacle en après-midi, par opposition à la soirée.

I also remember UK cinemas being full of smoke, and when I started going
to French cinemas in the 1980s it was a pleasant surprise to to find them
non-smoking, clean and air conditioned too. In Paris cinemas, Monday (or
was it Tuesday?) nights were cheaper than the rest of the week, so
affordable even when you were watching the centimes.

Me neither, but according to today's newspaper, they found heroin bags
"all over his house", so it's likely he's only got himself to blame,
and any pity or comiserations should be with his wife and children.

Not really a "non-entity" ... just another tween "singer" and child
celebrity gone bad. Probably forced into it by pushy parent(s) seeing
big dollar signs in their eyes.

Exactly. A non-entity.

Your definition of "non-entity" is rather ego-centric. I am certainly
no fan of Bieber, nor of pop music in general, but Bieber has the
following accomplishments (according to Wikipedia):

1. Four number one pop records.
2. Grammy awards: Best New Arist, Best Pop Vocal Album (2011)
3. Artist of the Year (2010 American Music Awards).
4. First artist to have seven tracks from a debut album (My World) in
the Billboard Top 100
5. 40 million followers on Twitter (second only to Katy Perry)
6. Third most powerful celebrity in the world (Forbes magazine 2012)
7. 15 million albums sold.

So hardly by any reasonable definition a "non-entity".

You are fortunate that you haven't heard of him. I am getting pretty
sick of hearing about him in the US. This, for example:

As none of this cuts any ice with me, it's irrelevant.

Yep, a real non-entity would be those idiots who are famous for no
reason at all ... the Kardashians for example, or anyone who is famous
for being on a "reality" TV show.

I'd heard about the lad in the context of Twitter followers, who I assume

The girl who was finally smart enough to get rid of the moronic doofus
Russell Brand ... although he thinks it was the other way around.

Tragic about PSH.

Embellishing that with wishing death on someone else is pretty low class.

Last fall, I was in the LA area for a funeral and went cycling. One ride
involved climbing a great hill out of Malibu and go down "Stunt Rd"
towards Calabassas inland. Amazing ride.

After the egg throwing thing, the location of Bieber's home was revealed
and I found out that great bike ride had taken me to within less than
2km of his home.

My initial reaction: I was lucky that he was likely not there because if
he had been driving that day, I might have been killed.

Bieber is currently charged with assault in Canada. If is is found
guilty and has a record, he may no longer be allowed into the USA. The
residents of his gated community would be releieved. (there has been a
petition to the whitehouse requesting Bieber be deported).

This isn'ty about a singer. This is about an unsupervised rich
attention-grabbing teenager being a danger to society.

It's too late for Bieber. What it should be about is passing a law that
restricts children, and even young adults, from being able to become so
famous so quickly ... part of whihc would be to severly limit the
number of hours they can work in the industry, legally enforce that all
money earned is put into a trust fund that they (and not their pushy
parents!) only get any access to when much older, reign in and sensibly
cap the obscene amounts of money paid to celebrities, etc.

As liberal/progressive as I am, even I can't stomach that degree of a

Hmmm... I can think of a whole boat load of politicians that far better
fit that description.

I always tell these folks that my computer is a company computer and so
they will need to call our IT person, whereupon they hang up. My scam
caller usually claims to be from Microsoft.

I've come to believe that we should be skeptical of any call we receive
from someone we don't know. I also believe that 99 44/100% of what they
advertise on TV is scams, including the $20 crap where they throw in
another one for free, reverse mortgages, investment firms, burial
insurance, and the rest. There is no truth anymore, there is only money,
and if you have it, someone out there wants it. The world sure has

It's just more obvious and intrusive now that we're all tethered via
our computerized underpants. I remember, mid-sxties, my father getting
"Nigerian scam" letters in the post -- flimsy carbon copy things. I
remember doing those chain letter things for postcards; my uncle did it
with bottles of booze. I remember when you could get a "lifetime"
subscription to Playboy for $20.
