With versioning, you can change your mind later (create a duplicate, then roll back the original), which granted adds an extra step, but I personally think it's worth it for the benefit of not having to remember to save changes (or if something goes wrong, not losing unsaved work). YMMV.

Whoah, Apple being responsive to user feedback!

But that difference is nothing to do with Duplicate or Save As. That is to do with autosave and versionning. In any situation where you open a file and make some changes but decide you don't want them, Autosave will have saved them and you have to roll the file back to the un-changed version. Whether there is a "Save As..." in there or not, this is the case. Robin

Whether > there is a "Save As..." in there or not, this is the case. wrong. they are very tightly coupled. the versioning system forces the user to duplicate first because it's going to autosave any changes to the original, whether you want it to or not. you have to plan in advance that you are going to make another copy, and you may not know this when you first open the file. without versioning, you can decide at any time to save to a new copy, which will leave the original untouched. there is no need to revert back because the original is still the way it was.

Here is a summary, some of which is redundant to the preceding discussion, but included for completeness. Before Lion, there were two, and sometimes three, save options. Assuming that the document has already been saved: Save did what it says; it saved the document as it was and left it open for further revisions. Save As retained the previously saved document with the same name, created and saved a new document with the new name, leaving it open for further revisions. Save a copy (or Save a copy as), which only some applications employed, retained the previously saved document with the same name, keeping it open for further revisions, and created and saved a copy of the document with the new name without opening it. With Lion and afterwards, there are Save, Duplicate, and (as of Mountain Lion) Save As (which is accessed by pressing the option key; it then replaces Duplicate): Save acts similarly to Save a Copy in the older method, except that all but the most recently saved version is visible and available through the Finder. If you want a previous version, you have to open the current version and use the Restore option. Duplicate creates a duplicate copy of the document without saving either; however, the duplicate copy does not have the previously saved versions of the original. Save As behaves the same as it did before Lion.

"all but the most recently saved" doesn't quite disclose the real
meaning of autosave, though. As you are editing, every once in a while,
autosave creates a new version of the document--like save a copy, except
that you can only get to it through Revert, which uses an interface
similar to Time Machine to browse through and pick a version.
It apparently chooses when to save versions by what changed rather than
by time--I just checked a document and found it has one version
yesterday at 23:11, TWO Sunday at 23:40, and one each Sunday at 23:30
and 23:21.

Not quite. Before, do a bunch of edits and then Save As--none of those
changes are in the original. Now, they all are.
There also used to be the option to exit without saving, discarding all
changes. Closest you can get now is "Browse all versions", figure out
which one is the one you opened (unless you know the exact time), revert
to that one, and then exit.
Bringing back "Save As" did NOT fix the screwup, which was the whole
idea in the first place of imposing an out-of-control half-assed version
control system on every document, whether or not it needs one and
whether or not it already has a real one.
The Mail.app version of autosave is even worse. If I spend twenty
minutes typing a long email, there will be DOZENS of versions of it
visible in the Drafts folder. When I send, usually all of them get
moved to the trash. Occasionally a few or even all stay in Drafts.
If I accidentally delete an e-mail, to find it in the trash, I have to
wade through all those useless drafts.
What Apple should have done with autosave is admit they screwed up, but
since some people like it, make it a user-selectable option. Better
yet, allow an app programmer to make it an app preference choice.

Jeez, I've never seen anything remotely like this. I've never seen a single draft in mail. I wonder if I have some option turned off.

That was 10.8.2. Keep up. Thanks for letting me know about these options. Wish Apple had done so. But that would be to "admit they screwed up." Of course, it's possible there was an announcement that I missed. -- Wes Groleau Change is inevitable. We need to learn that “inevitable" is neither a synonym for “good" nor for “bad.”

Exactly! It's part of my workflow to use "Save as", and it is a workflow I have used for years without a developer shepherding me into a different way of thinking. It is second nature for me to use "Save as" with Photoshop, Preview, and other software. I don't need to add an unnecessary step, and my original is retained unmolested. Apple! Please don't try and protect me from myself. -- Regards, Savageduck

it's been part of everyone's workflow since since the first mac, almost
30 years, possibly before that on other platforms.

Please don't try and protect me from myself. It has been part of my workflow for years to occasionally lose chunks of work if an application happens to crash and I haven't saved recently. It has been part of my workflow that if I quit an application then the ability to undo previous changes at a later date is lost. I welcome the end of these limitations. Robin
