Since I have moved from OSX 10.6.8 to 10.9 there have been a few changes I can tolerate and one or two I find irritating and might just have to tolerate. This little rant does not include the whine over applications lost due to lost support such as MT-NW. I will stick to four issues. 1. With "Spotlight" in 10.6.8, if I hovered the cursor over any file in the result list I was able to see/read path information to that file. Now with "Spotlight" in 10.9 it has no trouble locating files and providing a similar result list, but the once useful path information is now a thing of the past. We have been given the very pretty, fat thumbnails, which is are useless when it comes to providing location information. Does anybody here know how to go about restoring that old SL feature? ...or am I just pissing in the wind? 2. In a 10.6.8 finder/folder window I used to have information regarding the number of items in that window and the available disc space available of that particular partition. In 10.9, we have a very neat and clean window design ( the bottom of the window is now Jon Ive uncluttered) with none of that information and no option in the Finder Preferences, or the View Options to restore that information. While I can certainly select "Get Info" to get specific information in the usual Info window, the old tag at the bottom of the folder/finder window is gone, sacrifice to the Gods of neatness. 3. What ever happened to "Save as" in Preview? What were they thinking? 4. ...and now for my idiot encounter. After my 10.6.8 to 10.9 move, I checked all my various applications to see what other than MT-NW was lost to me. I have a LinkSys/Cisco E4200 providing me with my home Wi-Fi network. With that comes "Cisco Connect" management app. when I checked that I got this message; "Unsupported Operating system The router software supports these operating systems: -Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later -Mac OS X 10.6.1 or later -Mac OS X 10.7 or later" Obviously they didn't stick strictly to the meaning of "later" I am familiar with as 10.9 is certainly later than 10.6.1. So I called support as the support page was positively unsupportive. After explaining my issue to the resident "support idiot" he suggested that my best solution would be to replace my E4200 with their latest offering. I asked if the software packaged with their latest routers was OSX 10.9 compatible, he had no idea. He had no idea how they would provide an update if and when one would become available for my E4200 or the latest & greatest they have for sale as they don't have downloads available, only manual PDFs. Sheesh!!! -- Regards, Savageduck

While your white pants look nice in wind blown pale yellow you can also
search in finder. The path is at the bottom of the finder window, and
you can "right" click to "open enclosing folder" (or "view in finder",
whatever).

In Finder: View | Show [Hide] Path Bar

I still have it (in the File menu). There's no toolbar button (was
there before?).

Can't help you there - to put a point on it: I have no issues at all.

So, tell me again, why should I use "Spotlight now? >> 2. However, that seems to be providing an answer to the prior issue and only provides path information for the open folder and does not rest or replace the information which was previously available in "Spotlight". It certainly doesn't address my peeve #2. >> 3. What ever happened to "Save as" in Preview? What were they thinking? > > I still have it (in the File menu). I don't. Nope, I always accessed the "Save As " in Preview from the File menu or keyboard short cut. In 10.9 the former keyboard shortcut for "Save As" (Shift-cmnd-S) is now assigned to "Duplicate". >> >> 4. ...and now for my idiot encounter. >> After my 10.6.8 to 10.9 move, I checked all my various applications to >> see what other than MT-NW was lost to me. As I have said, nothing insurmountable, and nothing I cannot tolerate, but I am irritated a tad, and I am mostly pleased with OSX 10.9. -- Regards, Savageduck

Personally I've never seen a reason use Spotlight, but some people
(including some of the MacFormat magazine staff) love it and use it to
do everything - find document, launch applications, etc.

I esp. use it to launch secondary apps (like terminal)
- cmd-spacebar
- <t> <e>
- <enter>
that's it. running.
Dictionary lookups.
For files I use the spotlight entry in Finder.

Never liked Spotlight... hated it since day one, but it's a necessary evil. I use an app called EasyFind that allows you about a million more search options. https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11076/easyfind It's free, uses very little memory, and it's available from the App Store. -- "The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has it's limits."

This is why EasyFind is slower than SpotLight, **IF** SpotLight finds what you're looking for. In my long use of EasyFind, it has NEVER not found an item which *is*there*. SpotLIght *regularly* misses items which I know are there and in places where it should look, like my home folder, even when I have rebuilt the SpotLight index. I have done experiments where I'll be looking right at a file I'm trying to find with SpotLight, and it'll not find it. Another useful tool I've used which is very fast is Locator, a GUI for the built-in UNIX locate command (the inspiration for SpotLight). OS 10's chron routines evidently no longer update the locate database, but Locator has a button to do this. However, EasyFind and Find Any File are what I use most of the time. -- Entropy happens.

Hmm. It doesn't index but it doesn't explicitly say it doesn't USE indexes if they are available...
