I just got an electronic gizmo with a 3.5" CD-ROM included as
documentation. Can my superdrive read this thing or will it just get
stuck and cause me hours of aggravation?

There's a serious chance for the latter. Read it on some other machine
or try to download the contents from somewhere.

if it's a slot drive, it will get stuck.

Open your optical drive and see if it's got a center "cut out" slot
thing to drop in those small CD-Rs. I've played them in my Mac Pro
(which has the "cut out" thing).

NEVER EVER put any small size discs (mini-discs, business card discs,
etc.) in to ANY slot-loading drive. The disc will not be read and will
simply get stuck inside the drive (the drive can't eject it).

To read the smaller size discs you will have to use a try-loading drive
which has the template for the smaller size moulded into the tray.

Ah. You're absolutely right right, of course. I was referring to a
tray-loading drive. My Dell Linux laptop has one, my MacBook Pro (same
era) has a slot. On the Dell, I pulled the optical drive and put a HDD
in. I use sticks these days anyway.

It will not load and might even cause damage.

I bought an ASUS DVD/CD reader/writer with a drawer for my SO's MBA - so
I use it when I need to read one of those smaller disks or the
rectangular ones.

Which is rarer and rarer of course...

Another way is to mount it on a PC that has a drawer type drive, share
it (network) and then copy from there or simply copy off the files and
then transfer to the Mac.

Chances are whatever is on the CD-ROM is old anyway. Just get the latest
off the net instead.
