I strongly recommend that you just get the SSD. Fusion is a OK stopgap,
but it simply does not compare. Also, the bare SSD on the mini is a PCIe
SSD and super fast. Really really fast.

Black Magic test of over 600MB/s write and over 700MB/s read. Those are
not typos.

Humph. I thought the Fusion drive used the SSD part preferentially.

And am I right thinking that the most recent Mini can't have two
internal drives? When I got my 2011 Mini, I got the low-end model (fats
enough CPU), and had the empty drive slot filled with an SSD. Is this
no longer possible?

I'm sure other will correct me, but I believe that "Fusion" is limited
to SATA speeds for both the SSD and the spinning rusted platter. When
you get newer macs with SSD only, they have newer, much faster direct
interface to the system.

Sort of. My fusion drive is nowhere near as fast as a bare SSD.

Doesn't seem to.

Look back at some of the links to interviews with Tim Cook I have posted
over the last few months. He clearly stated it was a very low volume
product but Apple was keeping it because it filled an important niche.

Long delivery times don't mean much on their own because Apple may have
set production capacity to be very low.

As far as I know the Mac Pro has never been a high volume product for
Apple. Did you have a point?

You've said that for years about various products as I recall, and you
were wrong then too.

The tone in which Tom Cook explained it, it made it seem like the volume
was REALLY low, but Apple needed to kee the product because the users
were important to Apple.

This is different than a product launch with disposable chinese workers
that you can ramp up to high numbers during first few months and then
reduce, and do this again the next year.

The Mac Pro facility is likely designed to be low volume and Apple sees
no need to increase its capacity to meet temporary demand spikes
(especially since in USA, reducing headcount when demand goes back to
normal is harder than in China).

So if you have one large commercial order for MacPros, it will likely
result in delivery delays for normal customers while Apple fulfills the
orders.

There is nothing sinister about it. It is a small niche market that is
not growing, so Apple sees no reason to grow the capacity of the
assembly facility.

The deisgn of the Pro with lack of expansion has however reduced the
niche even further.

So far you haven't shown that anything is any different than it has been
historically for the Mac Pro. You're trolling.

You've no doubt said that each time you made this silly remark about
Apple purposely setting production capacity low. "But this time is
different!" More doom and gloom from the JF troll.

If you have evidence that Apple has done what you suggest, then you
should provide it. If not, you should stop saying this lie as if it's a
fact, trollboi.

You have absolutely no idea about the design or capacity of the factory.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. You're just
blowing hot air around.

You don't know the size of the market. You don't know the capacity of
the factory. You don't know Apple's plans. You're full of shit.

More bullshit from the bullshitter. You have no idea whether the Mac Pro
market has grown or shrank.

Apple has generally not admitted the MacPro was very low volume. Tim
Cook said so explicitely in that interview (and it was about the current
one, not the one before or the time between the two where people held
off buying).

You are taking things out of context just to try very hard to make me
look stupid. Hopefully people are smart enough to differentiate between
production shortfall during product launch frienzy and setting long term
production capacity on the MacPro to match average demand, which means
that any temporary spike in demand means delivery delays.

> You have absolutely no idea about the design or capacity of the factory.

Built-to-order. That says a lot. Parts are stoked based on average
order levels in a "just in time" philosphy to keep inventory as low as
possible. But this means that a spike in orders causes delays. This is
basic stuff that you know, but because you are out to insult me, you
conveniently forget.

Nonsense ... why would he say "keep" for a brand new product. It's not
like they were going to design it, build it, sell, it and then decide
two weeks later that they may as well "not keep" it. :-\

He meant the sales of the Mac Pro have always been low volume compared
to say the iMac, or even more so the iOS devices, and that they built a
new model because they wanted to *keep* that product line going.

He was talking about the previous model, which PARTLY had "low sales"
at that time because buyers were waiting for the new model to be
announced.

The Mac Pro will always be a low seller due to the cost of it and the
fact that most people simply don't need it.

Clearly. The first thing I did when Apple released them was go into my
local Apple store and hold it in my hands. It's sturdy, heavy, and has a
bottom surface that doesn't slide across a desk easily. Anyone who has
seen one in person knows this. JF is being his normal jackass self.

I have all sorts of tings on my desk.

A 27" iMac. a 27" Dell ultrasharp monitor. a 24" Dell monitor. A Drobo
5D. A mediasonic Raidbox. A powerstrip. A low-end celery PC with FreeBSD
on it (not plugged in currently). 8 are drives. um... oh, one of those
40 port USB2/3 hubs, and a keyboard, Trackman, and Apple trackpad.
Probably a few screwdrivers and an extra keyboard.

Know haw many things I've pushed off my desk? Ever?

None.

JF is trolling as usual. He hates the new Mac Pro and wants to shed it
in as bad a light possible.

It could sit in the pretty empty area behind my monitors and be
completely free of risk of being accidentally nudged off off. The new
Mac Pro is heavy enough that it would take a pretty good shove. No
more risk than my iMac being pushed off.

If someone doesn't realise that the design of the unit draws dust in
more so than it di for previous MacPro, then one doesn't change cleaning
frequency.

Does the average user even know how to open the new MacPro so you can
use some high pressure air to clean the dust out ?

And if someone doesn't realize that the new design fits neatly on a
desk, which gives easier access to the ports on the computer, then they
aren't very observant.

The average Mac Pro user knows how to open their Mac Pro. Duh.
