No kidding. I was amused to see that the keyboard shortcut for taking
screen shots way back in the System 7 days is the same as it is today.

I would have been perturbed if it weren't.

In the early days of the Mac, command-shift 4 would dump a screen print
to the Imagewriter. (Or was it command-shift 3?)

3 was a file, 4 was print it.

actually it has changed.

command-shift-4 is what's commonly used for screen shots because it's
either a user defined area or a specific window.

command-shift-3 does still do a screen shot, however, it's very rare
that someone actually uses that anymore since screens are *much* bigger
than they were back then and there are often two or more of them. a
screen shot would contain a *lot* of irrelevant stuff that would have
to be cropped out.

plus there are options to copy it to a clipboard and change the file
format.

And when you have multiple screens, it generates 3 separate image files,
one for each screen.

Yep, it's always been the same, but others have been added ...
Shift-Command-4 and adding Option to the combinations as well. Plus on
newer versions of Mac OS X you can tweak the settings to change what
image format the screenshot is saved in.

I find it amusing Apple keyboards don't have an optional alt and print
screen keys like IBM keyboards. Shift, command, and 3/4 are not ready to
remember. I always forget and have to look it up. :(

My beige G3 keyboard does have "Print Screen" printed on the F13 key,
but it doesn't do anything unless I'm using Virtual PC Windoze
emulation.

There could well be third-party software that lets you set the F13 /
Print Screen key (or any other key you want) as the screen capture
button.

Shift-Command / Shift-Option-Command 3 and 4 are easy enough to
remember ... if you use them often enough to need them, like most other
keyboard shortcuts once you run out of obvious ones.

The real issue was that Apple changed the file format and in early
versions of Mac OS X you're stuck with silly PDF. :-(

Windoze's Print Screen is more hopeless since all it does is copy the
entire screen to the clipboard (a crash two seconds later and you'll
have to redo it all again), although Microsoft did add extra features
in later versions of Windoze.

Yeah, I had to write it down so I can look it up when I forget. Heh.

I used to keep a list of them (for Mac and Windoze) in the Scrapbook
Desk Accessory ... in fact it's still there when I use Classic or
reboot in Mac OS 9, but it was only so I could easily post them when
someone wanted to know how to take a screenshot.

I just threw away old Mac magazines. One had 100 Mac shortcuts on the

That's nothin'! I saw an antique car show this past weekend and I was

But some of them have the steering wheel in the middle or even *gasp*
