#69446 — Schroedinger's Desktop Picture

[Mac OS X 10.8.5]

System Prefs->Desktop claims to be using a different picture than is
actually shown as Desktop background.

The real problem is that I really like the picture that does show as
Desktop background, but I cannot find the original picture file. I'm
beginning to think I must have accidentally deleted it. Yet it is still
displayed as the Desktop picture. Which suggests that Finder doesn't
display the original file, but stores a copy somewhere. But where?

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist also points to the wrong
file.

Same with:

tell app "System Events"
  picture of desktop 1
end tell
--> path to another picture file.

Still, Finder's Desktop does display the image I'm looking for. So it
must be somewhere.

Any ideas?

Quit the finder and take a screen shot (command-shift-4 and press the
space bar). That will make a copy of the desktop picture, so you won't
have to find the original. (Command-shift-3 won't do it because it
will include the menu bar.)

Heh, that worked. Nice hack :) Thanks.

Okay, so one time? In band camp? rijk <rijk@blah.invalid> was all, like:

plutil -p ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist

The first ImageFilePath should be it. Maybe. It's not on mine, but I am
using the default desktop currently.

No, that points to the earlier mentioned wrong image file.

Btw, where did you get the -p option from? man plutil doesn't list that.

It does in the version of plutil I'm running under 10.9...

It does for me:

-p Print the property list in a human-readable fashion. The
output format is not stable and not designed for machine
parsing. The purpose of this command is to be able to
easily read the contents of a plist file, no matter what
     format it is in.
