I was having some problems with my Mac Pro that still runs SnowLeopard. Among other other things, I had trouble saving an Excel program, some strange files have shown up I cannot eliminate, and I had to use force quitting several times. I was thinking hardware problems becaus I have installed an SSD and a 4TByte disk recently. To my surprise, someone calls me up and asks for me by name. He tells me that my computer sent his organization messages that indicated I have some malware that they could take care of remotely. To say that I was skeptical is an understatement. The outfit calls themselves iMax support with website https://www.imaxsupport.com/. What can people here tell me about them? What should my first steps be to track down malware problems? I am reluctant to download software from the web, but sometimes that is difficult to do. The problem may be with eyetv. It often is running in the background and has strange picture interfaces when text with copy and paste would be more useful. -- Sam Conservatives are against Darwinism but for natural selection. Liberals are for Darwinism but totally against any selection.

DO NOT vist their stupid website. You have NOT got any malware.
Just ignore the idiot on the phone - it's a well-known scam where they
just randomly call people hopeing to find someone naive or gullible
enough to believe them. Once they get access to your computer (and
usually it's only Windows computers), they can lock you out and the
basically blackmail you into paying them to release the machine again.
If the idiot calls again, ...
- tell them to wait a minute while you start up the computer,
then just leave the phone and go and do something else.
- tell them to hang on a minute while you get your more
computer literate policeman son / daughter to talk to them.
- tell them your computer is at another phone line and they
should riung that number - then give them the phone number
of your local police station.
- blow a whistle or air horn loudly down the phoneline.
- just hang up.

It often is running in the background and > has strange picture interfaces when text with copy and paste would be > more useful. eyetv may have problems of its own, but that is *not* why they called you.

I am now using Excel 2011. I do not remember which version that created the workbook that was being processed by Excel 2011. There was a problem with date conversion. In the end. I saved that particular worksheet in whatever format the computer was willing to use. Later, that worksheet was pasted back into the original xlsx file that had not been modified. Everything there seems ok now. Note, that Office 2011 is still sending out critical updates after three or four years. > > > To my surprise, someone calls me up and asks for me by name. I wish to thank you and everyone else who took the trouble to respond. Not having that much experience with these scamsters, you have helped me stick to my original skepticism. They just hit me at a time when I was questioning what was going on in my computer. I still in that state and regret having to spend effort. GETTING BACK TO THE MALWARE PROBLEM: If one suspects malware on a Mac, how would you even start to correct the problem? Is there any software that would be helpful? the chances of malware on a mac is for all intents, zero, which means any problem is almost always something else. there are a couple of examples but they're very, very rare. if you install software only from trusted sources, either from apple's app store or from established companies, then you are almost certainly not going to have any issue with malware. just because something weird is going on with a computer does not automatically mean malware. it could just be buggy software.

Is there any software that would be helpful? You haven't got any malware and you're unlikely to ever have any malware (unless you visiting porn websites and downloading pirate software). Just be sensible about installing software which you know is legitiamte and ignoring silly scam phonecalls. If you're really worried and seriously want to waste storage space, processor time, and download data, then there are free anit-virus applications for the Mac like ClamXav (http://http://www.clamxav.com/) and a few other over-priced applications ... BUT the chances that you'll ever find anything using them less than 0.000000000000000000001%. In decades of using Apple computers and helping numerous other people, I have only ever come across ONE virus (years ago), and that was a Windows one on a floppy disk so wouldn't have any affect on a Mac at all.

They are a company that makes their money cleaning windows machines. Most of these companies are scams and malware installers, but not all of them. "Mal" is short for "malicious;" something (software or a hardware/software device), that is /intended/ to do harm to one's computer. Hardware/software not working together properly, but not designed to harm one's computer, might better be called "buggy." Even if buggy software caused computer problems, I would not call it malware unless the vendor intended for it harm one's computer. True, I don't have EyeTV, but I don't think that it is sold for the purpose of damaging computers. -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm

I don't have eyeTV either, but a friend of mine has one and keeps a window open when ever he's coding. Sometimes he will go 30 hours straight. I had a good experience with an EyeTV but when I upgraded to the EyeTV HD -- for HD TV -- the device I received from Elgato would often produce falsetto sound like The Chipmunks as well as freezing. I returned the device to Elgato and they sent a refurbished replacement. This one doesn't have the Chipmunk problem and the freezes occur much less often but it does freeze once in a while. Sometimes closing and reopening the app will clear the problem, sometimes it's necessary to remove and replace the USB plug, and just yesterday I had to keep the plug removed for 30 seconds to guarantee a full hardware reset. I just installed a software update. Maybe that will help. -- John Varela

You could always say "malware" comes from the French word "mal", meaning "bad" or "harmful" (or even "evil"). ;-)

While I would not give EyeTV an award for well engineered software, I am still surprised it works as well as it does. My problems with it have usually arisen when I switch between cable and antenna. I also am upset that its database cannot be cut and pasted like text. Nevertheless, I now prefer to use that as my TV viewer instead of a dedicated digital TV set. -- Sam Conservatives are against Darwinism but for natural selection.
