I guess one instance is a problem and the other is a glitch. Combined
in one post as the problem revolves around the same issue.

MacBook Air 3,1 (11-Inch, Late 2010)
HD is an OWC Aura Pro 6G SSD that I installed.
two partitions
First partition SnowLeopard (running 10.6.8)
Second partition Yosemite (running 10.10.2)
Snow Leopard installed with the Apple memory stick that came with the
machine (not sure where that is now) and upgraded to 10.6.8.

problem - cannot directly switch system disks from a Snow Leopard
partition to a Yosemite partition

No problems going from Yosemite to SnowLeopard

On SnowLeopard:

both system drives show up on the desktop.

System Prefs -> Startup Disk does not show Yosemite

Disk Utility shows both SnowLeopard and Yosemite but the info on
Yosemite does not show a System Version.

I was a bit panicked when I first switched to 10.6.8 and couldn’t figure
out how to boot back into the Yosemite partition. I ended up using an
external drive (the stock MacAir drive that came with the computer
mounted into the OWC Envoy custom case that came with the replacement
drive) that has a bootable Mavericks 10.9.5 partition on it. That shows
up in the System Prefs -> Startup Disk choices. Boot to that and thence
back to the Yosemite partition on the MacBook Air.

MacBook Pro 8,3 (17-Inch, Early 2011)
two partitions
First partition Macintosh HD (running 10.10.2)
Second partition Macintosh HD 2 (running 10.6.8)
Snow Leopard installed with the Apple DVD installer supplied by Apple
(SRF2Z691-6799-A)
Not sure what version it installed but it was upgraded to 10.6.8

glitch - Snow Leopard system doesn’t see Yosemite partition on the
desktop and mis-ids it’s OS version in System Prefs -> Startup Disk

No problems going from Macintosh HD (10.10.2) to Macintosh HD 2

On the Snow Leopard system (Macintosh HD 2 partition):

The system sees Macintosh HD 2 but not Macintosh HD (on the desktop)

System Prefs -> Startup Disk shows 10.7 (not 10.10) on Macintosh HD but
will restart to it.

Disk Utility shows the Toshiba drive with the first partition as
Incompatible Format and the second as Macintosh HD 2. If I select the
Incompatible Format drive it shows the Mount Point as Not mounted.
