Except that fixing spelling in a static way is a recent invention and
has nothing to with creating the language, so your idea that there is
some original "correct" English spelling is nonsense.

Spelling in English was highly non-standardized and subject to change
with the fashions.

When Samuel Johnson tried (with some success) to make spelling
standard, it was already 1755 and England was no longer the only place
speaking English.

"Correct?"  Sir Humphry Davy named it "alumium" first (OED citation
first in 1808) then changed it to "aluminum" (first OED citation in
1812).  Then other scientists started to use "aluminium" (having,
like you, forgotten about elements like "platinum"). 

Both aluminum and aluminium continued to be used in England throughout
the 1800s.
