for what it's worth, here's my BU strategy

every night i clone my boot drive to a local drive using SuperDuper

i've been doing that for about 5 years

it's saved my ass a few times

i also use time machine

and, every week or five i clone my boot drive to a portable drive that
i keep in my car

i haven't lost a significant file in many years
