I've got both XP and 8.1 running under Parallels on a 2012 i7 quad Mac 
Mini, with 16GB ram and an SSD. It runs 8.1 very well. I did try and 
run 8.1 under Parallels on an older Mini (2009, 8GB ram, SSD) but it 
was hopeless, so you do need the horsepower.
