if you use time machine over the network, the drive is not connected
except when backing up. otherwise, there's a risk. you can also use
multiple time machine drives and/or clone the time machine drive
itself.

the point is that if you have a good backup strategy, including offsite
backups, you won't have an issue no matter what happens, whether it's
cryptolocker or your house burns down destroying everything.
