How can I get my Imac's screen to consistently darken after the two
minutes that I programmed it to darken in?

Sometimes the screen remains active, against my wish.

I noticed in Activity Monitor > Energy > Preventing Sleep that Itunes,
Dreamweaver, Airfoil and Chrome are preventing sleep.

I noticed also that the screen seems to stay light when I have some
browser windows open that have videos on those pages.

I want to darken the screen automatically without having to close the
four programs mentioned, and without having to close the browser
windows that have the videos in them, and without having to drag my
mouse arrow to one corner of the screen to activate Hot Corners
manually every time I want the screen saver to activate.

Thanks, Bird.

You didn't read carefully. I wrote "automatically". If I have to move
my mouse into a corner of the screen 25 times a day -- every time I
leave my computer -- over 9,000 times a year or 90,000 times per decade
-- that IS tough.

And often I'm in a hurry to leave the computer, so it's annoying to
have to do this every time.

And sometimes my mouse dragging is sloppy as I'm hurried, so that
although the screen darkens momentarily, it lightens again right after
that. That means that I often have return to the computer to repeat
the process, which menas probably having to repeat this precise mouse
dragging 10,000 times a year, or 100,000 times per decade, and oten
taking extra time to do it when I'm hurried.

The screen saver is supposed to work automatically after two minutes of
activity, but it's not working, as I explained.

And I don't wantt to worry every time I leave the computer: Is the
screen going to darken by itself after two minutes, or must I darken it
manually -- 10,000 times a year or 100,000 per decade.

This is not "insanely great" computer design, as Apple boasts about its
computers. I have enough things to worry about, without having to
worry and fuss with this 10,000 times a year, or 100,000 times every
decade.

This unreliable activation of the screen saver is something Apple could
fix it it tried to.

If you weren't a bird-brain -- responding disrepectfully with sarcasem
by implying I'm lazy -- you would have thouught of these things
yourself, without me having to explain them to you.

You can't blame Apple because some crappy third-party apps don't follow
the rules. :-\

If an app isn't letting the Mac screensaver work normally, then there's
little you can realistically do to force it to work. Check to see if
there's any updates for those apps or any comments on the developers'
support websites.

The best option is possibly to use Sleep instead. If you've got an
Apple keyboard, you can just use the keyboard command Shift + Control +
Eject. Once you've done it a few times it'll become a habit.

Good luck with that. I'm not aware of any settings or third party
software which can override this standard system behviour. (I found
mention of some old utilities which claimed to do that but the
developers have gone out of business and the only remaining references
are on untrustworthy sites like macupdate.com and cnet.com.)

If the hot corner to sleep the display doesn't work for you, then the
keyboard shortcut might be better: Control-Shift-Power.

The "Preventing Sleep" column in Activity Monitor shows you what is
preventing overall system sleep at that point in time, but not
necesssarily display sleep. Applicaitons can specify the degree to which
sleep is prevented while they are doing something.

For example, I see hidd normally listed there when I first look at what
is preventing sleep, because I've just been using the keyboard, trackpad
or mouse, but it disappears after a minute or two of inactivity, thereby
allowing the display to sleep on schedule.

In the case of something playing video that you chose (e.g. DVD Player
or similar), the software should be preventing the display from sleeping
(or dimming) for the duration of the video. The user expects that they
should be able to watch the whole video without having the computer go
to sleep or even dim the display; the user does not expect to have to
either keep interacting with the computer to keep the display awake or
reconfigure the energy saver settings just so they can watch a video.

In some cases this mechanism might activate when you don't want it to,
e.g. web browsers may be unable to tell whether you chose to watch a
video or it just happens to be playing automatically and you don't care
about it. They have to decide one way or the other and probably err on
the side of preventing display sleep/dimming if any video is playing.

Solution: get an ad blocker or similar which prevents video on web sites
playing automatically.

iTunes playing music will similarly prevent the computer going to sleep
(otherwise the music would stop even though you are listening to it) but
if it isn't playing video then it should allow the display to sleep.
iTunes will allow the computer to sleep once the music stops playing.

If you are playing music continuously with iTunes then your computer
will never go to sleep automatically.

Solution: stop playing music when you want your computer to go to sleep.

Airfoil probably prevents sleep while it is actively playing audio. It
might also keep preventing sleep indefinitely if you haven't enabled its
preference to disconnect from speakers after x minutes of silence.

Solution: don't keep playing audio (probably the fault of either iTunes
or the videos in your web browser), configure Airfoil correctly, or quit
Airfoil when you don't want it to be playing audio.

I can't explain why DreamWeaver might be preventing sleep. Probably an
obscure choice on Adobe's part, if it isn't actively doing something at
that point.

One annoying thing about Dreamweaver is that it does a lot of FTP
access in the background. I have no idea what it is doing or why. You
can open up the FTP log and watch it seemingly access your entire
website, even though you are doing nothing except uploading a single
file. It takes several minutes for it to quiet down and stop FTP
fetches.

Possibly syncing the local version and the online version of all the
files (HTML, images, etc.).

Personally I've always edited the local files and then used a separate
FTP app to upload them to the server when ready. I've never let
Dreamweaver itself have any FTP access to the webspace.
