#3220 — unidentified alert sound: 4 very low 'sighs'?

Subjectunidentified alert sound: 4 very low 'sighs'?
Message-ID<bcdtjeFhntdU1@mid.individual.net>
A number of times I have now heard my macbook pro (MacBookPro9,2)
make this sound without being able to identify
- what causes it
- what it means

The sound is a set of 4 very low (pitch) sighs, each starting
low, then getting lower in the space of about .8 seconds.
They start about 1 second apart.

The signal does not repeat usually, so it is hard/impossible
to capture it.

I have looked at all the sound configurations I can find and played
them all but it's not listed there. (system, growl etc)

Has anyone heard this before?

Is there maybe a database somewhere that contains
sounds not only to listen to but also by some form of description
to that one have a change of identifying such a sound one has
no recording or such of?

thanks

Some more info:

Mountain Lion 10.8.5, but this has happened on 10.8.2 etc also.

No notifications are seen in the notification center or such.

Looking at the Console (usually several minutes after the fact, as this
sound is not predictable, nor do i have exact times when it happens)
did not help. Lots of messages, but it is unclear which might be related
to this sound.

It could be that the sound is being made by one of the fans in the MBP -
that would be my suspicion.

Fans, hard drive, CD ... sounds like it could be anything that spins
and is slowing down and speeding up again.

Possible, but it souds too regular (4 exactly spaced sounds, always 4)

and they sound generated, not something that hardware makes by just
operating (even if faultily)

Plug in some headphones and see if the noise goes away?

The noise is *very* sporadic, so it's gone away (most of the time)
When it happens is unpredictable but it sounds ominous enough to
make me wonder what failure may be causing it. Hence my quest to
identify it. It's not an issue of a constant noise.

I've sometimes noticed something similar on my PowerBook G4 when working
on the battery only and few times right after the power supply has been
attached.

And as you say - 4 clicks/sounds or whatever one should call it... To me
it sounds like a very low 'sssh-sssh'. I think it may be a sort of a
relay that is switching on and off. I've located the sound to come
somewhere between the inner end of the battery and the back end of the
DVD drive.

Cheers, Erik Richard
