No, that is not how businesses work.

Well gee, yes, thanks, for your "contribution", I guess. I mean how much
were you inconvenienced for your own investment? : )

It's paid for via the over-bloated prices the customers pay for the
products / services the company sells ... just like the money paying
the management's / owner's over-bloated pay packet and the greedy
shareholders over-bloated returns.

The company I work at is publicly traded.

Ultimately the "free" goodies come out of the pockets of the employees
in the form of reduced paychecks.

Similarly, the "free" heat and hot water in my apartment building is
paid for by the tenants in the form of increased rent.

But FREE really looks good to prospective employees and tenants!

I worked for a publicly traded co. When we moved from one building
where we brewed our coffee in the lab, to a new building, having lab
coffee brew setups was forbidden.

A company was selected to bring in the new coffee machines. Not bad,
but nowhere as good as our old lab coffee ... and we had to pay for the
coffee.

But not the machine in the corporate area. That machine was "free" to
corporate personnel. The employees were subsidizing coffee for the
Pres, some VP's, some senior directors and their staff.

So I stopped paying for the coffee at the machine and did without.

The reason we have free coffee and soda (and live plants scattered
throughout the building) is that our Director of Operations toured
Facebook corporate headquarters and also looked into how Google treats
its employees. Out of this he picked and chose those things he felt
would make the company a local "employer of choice" without breaking the
bank.

What he failed to realize is that Facebook and Google don't attract as
many people as they do based solely on free coffee, free soda, and live
plants.

Yep, they attract people by having playground slides in the office
(hence why they're mostly 12 year olds) and letting their individual
workers do virtually no work all day long.

The only thing that is truly free is a drink of water (if you satnd in
the rain with your mouth open) and the air you breathe (unless you live
/ work underwater, high in the mountains, or in space) ... EVERYTHING
else is paid for by someone. Usually in the end that someone is the
general public through over-bloated prices for products / service and
taxes.

Not a whisky drinker then, eh?

We have all of that. We also brew our own beer and make our own wine in
the office. HR drew the line at setting up a distillery :-(

Most people take full advantage alright, even having their breakfast
cereal at work using office milk!

"Nobody" was hyperbole, BUT many people are actually snobs. They can't
be seen drinking instant or office coffee. They must go out (to waste
more time) and buy it from coffee shop made by an "expert barrista in a
cup proudly displaying the logo of Starbucks / The Coffee Club / etc.

I did put it in quotes (although the closing one went missing thanks to
a typo). I really only used Starbucks because it's a brand Americans
would know.

> Support your local espresso house!

They don't need support ... their over-pricing gives them plenty of
support.

There's actually one small privately owned coffee shop in the central
city that sells coffee at about half the price of the big brand shops.

Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Christmas also totally suck.

It's a good rule of thumb towake up with a scowl.
