thanks roger really... that's so simple, it never entered my mind > > i want to start over with my iTunes music library > > > > i have a large collection > > > > 180,000 mp3s > > 940 GBs > > > > it's been accumulating since 1999 > > and is spread over 13 different disk images > > on 7 different HDs > > > > it's time to redo it > > > > ? what's the simplest procedure > > > > ? do i have to delete the old DB and start over > > > > i'd really appreciate any advice on how to proceed > > select all > delete % drag files back in # done

Exit iTunes. Rename that directory to something else. Go into iTunes, preferences, advanced, and set a new iTunes Media folder location. That should give you a blank library. Make sure you have Keep "iTunes media folder organized" and "copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" checked. You can then File -> Add to Library and add the music files from your various old locations. This will copy those files to your new single library and build new index. Once this is done and you are satisfied, you can delete the various older locations. Note: playlists are not preserved in this way. Another way, inspired from: https://www.kirkville.com/how-to-rebuild-your-itunes-library/ Don't rename the old folder. Just change the preferences to point to new iTunes library location. Then import the Library.XML file. However, not sure if this will cause the music files to be copied to your new library. But would be a more comprehensiove way if the copy happens. (Not renaming old library ensures the Library.XML file has pointers to valid vile names). (read the above article carefully as iTunes no longer creates that écml file by default, but a preference setting causes it to be created)

roger's solution seems considerably simpler ? is there some disadvantage to his method In article <q%0DD.114902$Ol2.52356@fx17.iad>, JF Mezei <jfmezei.spamnot@vaxination.ca> wrote: > On 2018-11-02 13:20, heron stone wrote: > > > if i select all the files in iTunes music and delete them, > > it won't actually delete the files from my HD > > > Go into iTunes preferences, Advanced, note the location of the current > library. thanks so... given my simple new setup, 240,000 audio files 1.1 TB all in one folder (with subfolders) it seems to me the easiest method would be to select all files in iTunes and delete them then drag the audio folder into iTunes and wait a long time ? can it really be that simple In article <021120182131260741%nospam@nospam.invalid>, nospam <nospam@nospam.invalid> wrote: > In article <021120181812573355%heron@invalid.invalid>, heron stone > <heron@invalid.invalid> wrote: > > > roger's solution seems considerably simpler > > it also works. > > > ? is there some disadvantage to his method > > no > > > > In article <q%0DD.114902$Ol2.52356@fx17.iad>, JF Mezei > > <jfmezei.spamnot@vaxination.ca> wrote: > > > > > On 2018-11-02 13:20, heron stone wrote: > > > > > > > if i select all the files in iTunes music and delete them, > > > > it won't actually delete the files from my HD > > > > > > > > > Go into iTunes preferences, Advanced, note the location of the current > > > library. My instructions did not involve deleting anything and made things reversible, as well as ensuring your settings resulted in new copies of music created in the central location instead of across many drives.
