Looked like a VHS tape in a black snapcase to me.

Didn't notice the VCR, but the VCR on The Goldbergs is the VCR my
girlfriend's family had in about 1983 or so (the one with the big blue
play button). It was expensive, but I couldn't tell you how much. Over
$500, and closer to $1000, I believe.
