Bzip2 became popular because of its smaller file-size (and possibly faster decompression), but in these days of high-bandwidth and big hard-drives and fast processors, it really makes no difference. I just keep a couple of aliases around for both formats. Tar is pretty sophisticated, it can hanld xz and lzma and so on. Apple stuff comes in .dmg, which is a pretty good archive format ... -- Where's the Vangelis music? Pris' tongue is sticking out in in the wide shot after Batty has kissed her. In the context of compiling and installing open source *nix software, anyone familiar with such will agree it's simple. The person who asked about it mentioned they were somewhat familiar with software development. That's all that is required. I didn't state it was for everyone. So you shouldn't take it that way. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. Use a real news client instead. JR

Posted this a little earlier and didn't see it. If I spazzed out and sent it to you mailbox my apologies On 3/28/15 10:51 AM, Jolly Roger wrote: > Download slrn from: <http://sourceforge.net/projects/slrn/> > Download slang from: <http://www.jedsoft.org/releases/slang/> > > 1. Enter this command to configure the package: ./configure Downloaded slrn-1.0.1.tar and slang-2.3.0.tar. Double clicked each to create a slrn-1.0.1 and a slang-2.3.0 folder Used the terminal cd command to default to slang-2.3.0 Entered the ./configure command and got: checking build system type... x86_64-apple-darwin14.1.0 checking host system type... x86_64-apple-darwin14.1.0 checking for gcc... gcc checking whether the C compiler works... no configure: error: in `/Users/mjohnmatlaw/Desktop/slang-2.3.0': configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables See `config.log' for more details A snapshot of the files in the slang folder. https://www.dropbox.com/s/u1wonpwghyy3kkz/slangfolder.png Couldn’t figure out how to access the config log. This is a 10.10.2 system btw. http://www.slrn.org/download.html mentions: Besides the obvious need for compiling software slrn 0.9.9p1 requires version 2 of S-Lang and its "development" files to be installed before compiling slrn. If the required S-Lang library is not available from your distribution it can be downloaded from John E. Davis's S-Lang Library Information Page. Wouldn’t seem to be related to a slang installation but I’m wondering if I need it for the slrn install.

The c++, cc, > clang++ and some other files show up as aliases. It sounds like it installed, but perhaps you have not yet agreed to the Xcode license agreement. Try running gcc from a terminal window: gcc If you see a message about agreeing to the Xcode license, run gcc as root and then accept the license agreement: sudo gcc One you accept the license agreement, you should be able to compile with the command-line tools. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. You have a compiler available from Apple. IIRC the simplest way to install the command line tools is open a terminal and type gcc, which will prompt you to install them. You download two files (slrn-1.0.1 and slang-2) and type ./configure in the slang directory and then ./configure in the slrn directory. Done. -- http://2blog.kreme.com He remembered the knowledge. He remembered the loneliness.
