Nice to know, but I doubt I'll change my preference.

Yeah, but some download sites don't offer a choice. Bzip2 became popular
because of its smaller file-size (and possibly faster decompression),
but in these days of high-bandwidth and big hard-drives and fast
processors, it really makes no difference.

I just keep a couple of aliases around for both formats. Tar is pretty
sophisticated, it can hanld xz and lzma and so on.

Apple stuff comes in .dmg, which is a pretty good archive format ...

Yep. In the context of compiling and installing open source *nix
software, anyone familiar with such will agree it's simple. The person
who asked about it mentioned they were somewhat familiar with software
development. That's all that is required.

I didn't state it was for everyone. So you shouldn't take it that way.

Since they include such "steps" as "change directory" and "change

Downloaded slrn-1.0.1.tar and slang-2.3.0.tar. Double clicked each to
create a slrn-1.0.1 and a slang-2.3.0 folder

Used the terminal cd command to default to slang-2.3.0

Entered the ./configure command and got:

checking build system type... x86_64-apple-darwin14.1.0
checking host system type... x86_64-apple-darwin14.1.0
checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler works... no
configure: error: in `/Users/mjohnmatlaw/Desktop/slang-2.3.0':
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details

A snapshot of the files in the slang folder.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/u1wonpwghyy3kkz/slangfolder.png

Couldn’t figure out how to access the config log. This is a 10.10.2
system btw.

http://www.slrn.org/download.html mentions:

Besides the obvious need for compiling software slrn 0.9.9p1 requires
version 2 of S-Lang and its "development" files to be installed before
compiling slrn. If the required S-Lang library is not available from
your distribution it can be downloaded from John E. Davis's S-Lang
Library Information Page.

Wouldn’t seem to be related to a slang installation but I’m wondering if
I need it for the slrn install.

Yeah you need to install compiler tools:

Bummer - did this and still getting the same error message off
./configure . /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr/bin is showing
the files that were supposed to have been installed. The c++, cc,
clang++ and some other files show up as aliases.

It sounds like it installed, but perhaps you have not yet agreed to the
Xcode license agreement. Try running gcc from a terminal window:

gcc

If you see a message about agreeing to the Xcode license, run gcc as
root and then accept the license agreement:

sudo gcc

One you accept the license agreement, you should be able to compile with
the command-line tools.

You just open it in any text editor, such as TextEdit or TextWrangler.

I'd be interested in knowing what errors are in the config.log. Those
messages may give you a better clue as to what is needed.

Sorry, didn't put that right. I don't know how to access the config
log. Don't know where to find it.

It's in the screen shot you supplied (above).

Anyhow, I think the real problem is you need to accept the Xcode license
agreement. Try what I suggested.

That did the trick. Did get an error message

...By typing 'agree' you are agreeing to the terms of the software
license agreements. Type 'print' to print them or anything else to
cancel, [agree, print, cancel] agree

You can view the license agreements in Xcode's About Box, or at
/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/License.rtf

clang: error: no input files

Didn't seem to matter. Managed to follow the rest of your instructions
and can now fire up slrn in terminal. I'll have to see about putting
the NNTPSERVER info and whatever else I need.

Thanks for your help.

Excellent! Feel free to ask if you need help configuring it.

You have a compiler available from Apple. IIRC the simplest way to
install the command line tools is open a terminal and type gcc, which
will prompt you to install them.

You download two files (slrn-1.0.1 and slang-2) and type ./configure in
the slang directory and then ./configure in the slrn directory. Done.

He remembered the knowledge. He remembered feeling his mind as cold as
ice and limitless as the night sky. He remembered being summoned into
reluctant existence at the moment the first creature lived, in the
certain knowledge that he would outlive life until the last being in the
universe passed to its reward, when it would be his job, figuratively
speaking, to put the chairs on the tables and turn all the lights off.
He remembered the loneliness.

? No.

No, that will only configure the package. You still need to compile and
install it.

./configure
make
sudo make install

Repeat for each package.

Well, you can skip make and just do sudo make install. Not sure how that
got left out of the previous posts though. I was pretty sure I typed it.

Demons have existed on the Discworld for at least as long as the gods,
who in many ways they closely resemble. The difference is basically the
same as between terrorists and freedom fighters.
