You first have to configure the package for your build environment. Then you have to compile it. Only after you configure and compile it can you install it. When you run make with no arguments, the compile is executed from the start. If you do not do this, the package is not compiled. When you run make with the "install" argument, only the "install" target is executed. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. I've come across projects where the install target didn't do things that needed to be done before installation, and you had to run make (all) first. If the build package is not written to so a make all from the install target, you'll have to run it first. > Funny, I just built bind and a new version of postfix last night using > "make install" without make and it worked fine. Okay, so one time? In band camp? bill van <billvan@delete.shaw.ca> was all, like: > And some are still happily using MTNW in 10.6.8, because there's no > compelling reason to upgrade just yet. There are *many* compelling reasons to upgrade, in fact. They may not apply to you, or you may not be aware of them, but they certainly exist. Continuity and iCloud are each enough reason for me, and that's just off the top of my head. Thinking for a few seconds, the massively improved memory management and energy efficiencies are each a rason to upgrade. I have much better battery life on my laptop with 10.10 than I did with 10.6-10.8, at least. Instant Hotspot, which I use often when I take my computer out and about, and even occasionally at home when I want to test something from outside my LAN. -- http://2blog.kreme.com "Kill yourself and roll a rogue. I accept that there are many users, quite possibly most, who need one or more features of the latest OS versions. But I'm a low-power user: word-processing, email, general browsing and searching, Usenet, Skype, a few aging games. It all works well for me now. I don't use any wireless devices that need synching. If I upgrade, I break the last version of the news reader I've been using since 1994 and a few older games. I gain nothing I feel a need for. I'll have to upgrade sooner or later when something I need comes along, or Apple decides to block the free upgrade path that exists now. But not yet. > > Continuity and iCloud are each enough reason for me, and that's just off > the top of my head. > > Thinking for a few seconds, the massively improved memory management and > energy efficiencies are each a rason to upgrade. Don’t forget peripherals. Drivers (printer, scanner, etc.) notoriously quit working when one upgrades OS. And frequently this means buying a new peripheral(s) as the manufacturer didn’t release an updated driver for your model. Doubly likely if you’re skipping several OS versions in your upgrade.

It's been a long time since an OS update broke a peripheral for me. Of course, I stopped buying HP printers a long time ago. -- http://2blog.kreme.com Varium et mutabile semper Femina.

I've upgraded OS X from 10.3 all the way to 10.10 without a single peripheral malfunctioning. You must be thinking of *other* operating systems. > And frequently this means buying a new > peripheral(s) as the manufacturer didn’t release an updated driver for your > model.
