Unison is now free, but unsupported: http://www.panic.com/blog/the-future-of-unison/ But, truthfully, if you’re not willing to put in some effort to come back and bring some people with you, you shouldn’t bother. If you can take it or leave it, like any other form of infrastructure, it will decay and crumble to the point where most people will have no choice but to leave it. -- "Also . . . You will need to have this library installed before you can build slrn. See <http://www.jedsoft.org/slang/> for links to the library." Looks like the pre-compiled binary might be the easiest but it says underneath that "Note however when considering the use of these binaries that it is often better to compile your own "vanilla" copy of slrn from source code and certainly if you wish to apply patches you will need the original source code." Plus the MacOS version is 0.9.9-1 where http://www.jedsoft.org/snapshots/ page shows slrn-pre1.0.3-1.tar.gz and http://sourceforge.net/projects/slrn/files/ shows slrn-1.0.1.tar.gz . I'm just wondering whether someone with very limited, decades old programming experience could dl the source code, a compiler, other tools (version 2 of S-Lang and its "development" files?) and get a usable newsreader. Thing is it looks pretty stable. And supported. And I don't think I'd have a problem with the command line. (My very limited experience was partly with VMS in the 80s.)

The MacPorts version appears to be the 1.0.1 stable build: https://trac.macports.org/browser/trunk/dports/news/slrn/Portfile > I'm just wondering whether someone with very limited, decades old > programming experience could dl the source code, a compiler, other tools > (version 2 of S-Lang and its "development" files?) and get a usable > newsreader. You probably could. But even as someone who *is* all up-to-date with development tools, I can tell you that it just isn’t worth the bother. Even MacPorts I don’t find useful, because I don’t trust Apple not to pull the rug out from under the software it installs. The easiest thing to do for most non-Mac and “legacy” software is to run it in a VM like VirtualBox so that it has the full environment it was developed for. That way, if I wanted a recent slrn or any of the other command line newsreaders, it’s just an apt-get away for me. There’s even some chance I could run MT-NW if I tracked down a copy of Mac OS X Server to put on a VM. But Usenet is not the main reason I would bother to do that. > Thing is it looks pretty stable. And supported. Nothing about Usenet is properly supported any longer. I used to like slrn back in the day, but now that I’ve looked through the source code it makes me ill to think about using it. Any stability you see is an artifact of it’s long history, not of design. -- "Also . . . I can kill you with my brain." River Tam, Trash, Firefly

It's a *very* simple compile. > Even MacPorts I don’t find useful, because I don’t trust Apple not to > pull the rug out from under the software it installs. That's a concern even with Mac GUi software though. The biggest issue I have with MacPorts is the overhead. Most of the *nix software I need is easily compiled stand-alone without a package manager like MacPorts. > The easiest thing to do for most non-Mac and “legacy” software is to > run it in a VM like VirtualBox so that it has the full environment it was > developed for. That would be extreme overkill. You'd need more storage space, more memory, and lots of CPU overhead to do that. Theres no need to run an entire virtual machine with an entire guest operating system just to run slrn, because slrn is developed for Mac OS X, which is why it compiles quite nicely in Mac OS X. > That way, if I wanted a recent slrn or any of the other > command line newsreaders, it’s just an apt-get away for me. One of the great things about OS X is it's ability to run most *nix software *without* having to run Linux. You get the great user experience of OS X combine with the command-line environment of Unix. No need for Linux at all. > There’s even some chance I could run MT-NW if I tracked down a copy of > Mac OS X Server to put on a VM. But Usenet is not the main reason I > would bother to do that. If you install a modified application to replace one that Apple also supplies, and if you put your modified software in the places where Apple puts the original, it can happen. Do this in an administrator account on your computer: Download slrn from: <http://sourceforge.net/projects/slrn/> Download slang from: <http://www.jedsoft.org/releases/slang/> 1. Decompress both archives. 2. Open a terminal window. 3. Install slang: a. Use the cd command to change the working directory to the slang directory. b. Enter this command to configure the package: ./configure c. Enter this command to build the package: make d. Enter this command to install the package (supplying your password when prompted): sudo make install 4. Install slrn: a. Use the cd command to change the working directory to the slrn directory. b. Enter this command to configure the package: ./configure c. Enter this command to build the package: make d. Enter this command to install the package (supplying your password when prompted): sudo make install 5. Copy the slrn configuration file from slrn-1.0.1/doc/slrn.rc to your home directory, edit it as you see fit, and rename it .slrnrc so that slrn will see it when you start it up. Feel free to post here (and news.software.readers) for help with configuration if needed. Nope. Those are the same version. The contents are the same, just compressed differently. The bz2 file is compressed with Bzip2. The gz file is compressed with gzip. I typically choose the tar.gz file, because I can decompress it with: tar xzf filename.tar.gz.
