And there was nothing wrong with that - because of "Classic", a compatibility layer that allowed you to execute MacOS 9 applications on OS X. This was a nice working software, and I really don't understand why Apple ever stopped supporting it. They should even have ported it to Intel IMO - would have gotten them a few more hardware sales. -- In a world without walls and fences, who needs windows and gates?

If I need to run classic versions of Mac OS, I use SheepShaver or Basilisk II. You can also get 10.6 up and running in VirtualBox to use Classic if desired. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. If I need to run classic versions of Mac OS, > I use SheepShaver or Basilisk II. With you so far. (I have two working older Macs for that purpose, and since about 2005 have not had a need for running Mac OS 9 while away from home or work, so I haven't bothered with an emulator.) > You can also get 10.6 up and running in VirtualBox to use Classic if > desired. Pardon? 1. Classic didn't run on 10.5, so 10.6 is well out of the picture. 2. Classic only worked on PowerPC Macs. VirtualBox provides a virtual Intel Mac, and 10.6 is Intel only. Even if you got 10.4 working in VirtualBox, it wouldn't give you Classic. Running Mac OS 9.0.4 or earlier via a PowerPC emulator such as Sheepshaver is feasible. Running the Classic environment in PowerPC Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier on an Intel Mac is not possible, because there are no PowerPC Mac emulators which support Mac OS X as the guest OS. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Though I have to say in my experience, stability issues aren't actually all that common. It usually comes down to a particular application crashing during launch (sometimes crashing the OS as well), or a certain feature not working correctly. In general if the application doesn't crash during launch, chances are it'll function just fine in SheepShaver / Basilisk II. > Having a real Mac able to run the older system (space and convenience > permitting) is better. Definitely. I keep a trusty old beige PowerMac G3 and some even older models in the closet for such occasions. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. OS 8 and OS 9 were both crash-o-rama spectaculars for me. OS X 10.0.3 was the only reason I stayed with Macs. The improvement in stability was so dramatic.

It was heavily criticized for its slow application launch speed and user interface response speed. The interface response times compared to earlier Apple operating systems showed that Mac OS X still had a long way to go in terms of interface performance. € Stability ‹ While Œtheoretical¹ stability in Mac OS X was much better than stability in Mac OS 9,[citation needed] Mac OS X was riddled with fatal bugs that caused kernel panics, especially in complex hardware setups. € Missing Features and Hardware Compatibility Issues ‹ Another reason for criticism were the missing features, especially missing DVD playback, as well as CD burning, both of which had been available in the prior version of Mac OS. Mac OS X v10.0.2 included the necessary software frameworks to allow iTunes 1.1.1 to provide audio CD burning support, but data CD burning had to wait until version 10.1. There were also several issues in respect to missing printer and other hardware drivers. > > mac os 8 and 9 rarely crashed unless you ran buggy apps. if you didn't > > run buggy apps, they were rock solid. > > I basically never ran MacOS 9, but I wasn't very happy with MacOS 8. both worked fine.

But the simple fact that I could drop to the command line and I could crash apps without rebooting were all worth any sluggishness. > Stability While theoretical¹ stability in Mac OS X was much > better than stability in Mac OS 9,[citation needed] Mac OS X was > riddled with fatal bugs that caused kernel panics, especially in > complex hardware setups. 10.0 crashed less than MacOS 8 for me. Ack.
other software companies Apple
Features missing alpha 10.0 Cheetah
Feature complete,
but major bugs beta 10.1 Puma
First release,
with minor bugs 1.0 10.2 Jaguar
Second release,
reasonable useful 2.0 10.3 Panther
I switched with 10.2.3 or so, had 2 partitions on my Powerbook Titanium
so I could natively boot MacOS 9 which ran circles around Jaguar.

Not on any of my computers. At least one system failure and reboot in a two hour period was normal. 8 & 9 sucked big time IME. I started running NetBSD on one Mac just to try to find something I could be productive using (NetBSD was a bridge too far for me, though).

Unless I used third party extensions- then stability started going down. It paid to be very careful and sparing in that regard, as a result. Which was tough since there were so many useful and fun extensions *sigh* Plus buggy as hell apps like Internet Explorer for Mac made life hell. Mac IE would nearly always corrupt my Internet Config prefs upon crashing, which made it 10 times as bad. -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.
