I agree while SSD is Hot commodity. It hasn't been on the market to
prove it reliable.
Unlike a Standard Hard Drive when I SS goes bad there is no warning. One
second it working , 1/2 second it's toast. On a Hard Drive, when it is
going bad it usually shows symptoms before it goes belly. Of there are
things you can do to a Hard drive to allow you to back up. I've resorted
to giving a stiff wrap with the handle end of a screwdriver right on
shaft bushing area. Or in some case you can stick in in a Freezer in a
Freezer bag for 24 Hours and allow the spindle to work long enough to
get to information off.

yes it has, and it's *much* more reliable than a hard drive with moving
parts.

> Unlike a Standard Hard Drive when I SS goes bad there is no warning.

so what? if it fails, simply restore from a backup. chances are it
wont'.

and drives often fail without warning too.

try dropping an ssd and a hard drive. see which one fails first.

Right, I make backups to deal with such problems, and I've had far more
mechanical drives fail on me than SSD drives because, well, no SSD drive
have failed for me, ever.

Not the OP, but clearly if you're talking about when using USB, the
speed of the SSD is
entirely wasted. However, when using Thunderbolt (requirement #4) it
would not be. If it
is going to be used on multiple computers and one of them *does* have
TB, it's not a waste
at all.

Secondly, just on purely physical durability, the SSD has some
advantage, too. But in my
experience, 2.5" HDs nowadays are astonishingly solid, even when moved
around and such - one
is much more likely to cause a problem with the cable connection when
moving it around
than to cause a HD crash. (And when it's not plugged in, the fact that
it's an HD is pretty
much a total non issue, as the drive heads should be automatically
parked anyway).

Here's one example which meets all the OP's requirements other than
capacity. It's
very much NOT CHEAP:

<http://9to5mac.com/2013/11/26/mini-review-elgato-thunderbolt-drive-512gb-external-ssd/>

There's also this, but it looks like it comes maxed out at 256GB now:

<http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-Rugged-Thunderbolt-Series-9000352/dp/B00A4BEG8M/ref=pd_cp_pc_1>

It may be possible to get one of those or, perhaps, one of these:

<http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Buffalo/HDPA1.0TU3/>

and replace the stock drive with a bigger SSD. Note that a naked 1TB
SSD is going to be
over $1000 by itself, so the marginal cost of the enclosure here, even
when talking about
something like that Buffalo one at $200 (including the stock 1TB HD) is
relatively the
smaller bit of expense.

You probably won't see a 1TB SSD USB drive for consumers. At least not
until 6TB internal drives go under $100. #2, #3, and #4 (USB2) you can
have now.

If you want this, you'll have to build it from parts.

How so? SSD drives are small, slap four 256GB ones toegther in an extern al
enclosure powered over USB/TB and a raid controller. SHould work... I'd
settle with 500GB as well :)

But yeah, it seems that these kind of drives are scarse...

As I said, you'll have to build it. You may get 4 256GB SSDs (I'd use 5
to create a RAID5 so you have something more robust) into a single
enclosure but I doubt it would be powered solely by a single USB cable.
And there's the issue of SW RAID (unless you're also going to build a HW
RAID controller into this thing).

It's your money really. No vendor has these 4 things right now. And my
supply of Melange is gone, so I can't see when it might exist. I
suspect you'll see a 1TB consumer grade drive. There's not much call for
RAID-ing SSD unless you're in the server space.

This one gives you three out of four, Jonas: http://tinyurl.com/cyeybm8
A handyman might be able to put a 1TB in it for ya... Maybe. Samsung
makes a 2.5" SSD. USB3 gives you USB2. ;-)

It's a good contender, but alas, it's capacity is too small.

i understand that. AS SAID: A handyman might be able to put on a 1TB SSD
into it... Whatever. If you really need a portable 1TB SSD today your
beast shot, IMNSHO, would be to buy the drive separately, put it in a
USB3 enclosure awaiting one with Thunderbolt too. I can't find the
latter either.

Indeed. If such an enclosure existed, I would probably do just that. But it
has to have both USB3 *and* Thunderbolt. It's thunderbolt I want, and USB
is for my iMac at home, that would only do USB2 speeds, which won't cut it
unless it's an emergency.

Or, I'll get a new Mac Pro for work and move my work iMac home. :)

Well, maybe next year. Such and enclosure most likely doesn't exist.
So Santa is leaving you a Windows Surface RT tablet instead. He get them
really cheap and heard they make great gifts.

Good luck with your quest for mythical hardware. It's good to reach for
that which doesn't exist yet.

You'll have to literally build said enclosure yourself. Maybe there's
money is such a creature but the margins would be killer and you're have
to have almost nonexistant manufacturing costs to make anything at all
on it.

The drobo 4-bay enclosure seems to be the best bet right now

I have one. I love it. I don't keep my primary iPhoto repository on
it. It's slow.

I keep my iPhoto repository on a separate FW800 external HD, and Time
Machine backs it up to the Drobo. (And CrashPlan backs it up across
town to an external HD attached to another computer completely).

Drobos are great. But they aren't fast, at least in my experience.

That's my experience as well, but this one can take four SSD drives in it,
so amping up with four 480GB SSD drives in it would give me somewhere
around 1TB of SSD storage. Question is whether it's still too slow.

In point of fact, Drobo has a case for 4 or 5 2.5" drives.

I think so... The laCie drive appears to be that.

Hmmm, four 2.5" bays, can I put SSD's in them? And for obvious reasons it's
not bus-powered.

I've had a Drobo once, it was *dog slow*. Perhaps they're faster these
days? A great benefit with them is that they're hotswappable and you can
mix drive make/sizes as you please. But they also require special software
to manage...

It's the best suggestions thus far, thanks Lewis.
