Trying not to be nasty. . .

New laptop. Great resolution. Pretty speedy. Most of the transferred
software except my graphics editor at least opens.in Yosemite. It proved
impossible to install SnowLeopard on one side of a partitioned drive. I'm
currently editing fotos on the old computer. The plot was to move results
to the new one via thumb drive. It won't work.

Despite what I have been told by people who supposedly know, .jpg files are
NOT generic. New laptop kept telling me it couldn't open ColorIt!, which I
knew. I deleted ColorIt! entirely from it. Same message. I need to call
Apple and dump it into their laps, but I am very upset. I have 15+ years of
fotos I can only open one at a time, request Info, change the opening
program, and resave. One at a time for thousands of fotos. I can't even
open foto pages, and other programs i have that can open fotos are useless
or terribly messy (Pages, in which I can't even crop a foto) to add text
to. If I accidentally touch anything on a Pages page with fotos and text in
the wrong place, I have to do it over, sometimes from scratch. All the rest
of the programs I've tried so far will at least open. I haven't tried all
of them; there's a limit to the amount of frustration I can endure at one
time. I decided to ask for help here.

What I currenly have to work with are the new iPhoto, Graphic Converter,
and Preview. One at a time, after opening Get Info, I can tell one or the
other to open one foto, then save it as openable by that thing. Is there
something that offers a free preview that can open my .jpg files AND let me
put together pages with both text and graphics, unlike that   \{%%{
$@#{£¥€^ Pages?

They don't open on my new laptop.

They don't open in Preview? I seriously doubt that. What application are
you talking about?

Then either your laptop is faulty or they aren't .jpg's.

What makes you say that?

Not sure what that has to do with JPEG files, but okay.

What message? You have yet to post a message.

Is asking for help here or elsewhere out of the question?

It seems like you are talking about changing the default application for
JPEG files. If you want to do that for all of them:

1. Select one of the JPEG files in a Finder window.
2. Choose File > Get Info from the Finder menu bar.
3. In the Open With section of the Info window, set the application you
want to use to open that type of file.
4. Click the Change All button just below that to set the same
application as the default application for all files of that type.

Since you haven't even explained what exact steps you are taking, it's
going to be hard for anyone to help you without pulling teeth.

> I can't even open foto pages

What exactly is this so-called "foto page" to which you refer? How have
you tried to open it, and how has that failed?

Preview will add text to images. So will Pixelmator, Affinity Photo, and
numerous others, both free and commercial.

Pages would be one of the *last* applications I would use to add text to
images.

Nah, you can do that for all files of that type easily, as described
above. That functionality has been around for ages through many OS X
releases.

Ah, now it sounds like you want to add images to a page of text. That
sounds more like the job for a word processor. Pages may be overkill for
that, depending on your needs, though, since it's more geared towards
page layout type stuff.

Have you tried TextEdit? It's included with OS X and can do simple
things with images and text.

Have you tried Bean? It's a free nice word processor:

Why would you want to crop images in Pages? That's not what it's for.
You have Preview, you can use that to crop them.

In addition to what JR said about changing all files of a certain type
(jpegs in this case) to open in a given application, you can also
drag/drop the image onto an app in the Dock to have that app open that
image. Or select 50 images and drop them onto the app, such as Preview.
It'll open them all at once.

You can also create pages in Pages with text and graphics, easy enough
to do. Just choose to create a Word Processing document when you start
Pages, instead of a page Layout document.

Ah, I've never used Pages, and didn't know there were two modes. Thanks
for the info. : )

Pages is a pain, but I use it because I have yet to find anything less
painful to do what I want to do.

Including simple word processor applications?

It might help if you explained exactly what is it you want to do.

(If you think Pages is a pain, I'm betting you'd hate professional page
layout applications like Quark Xpress and Adobe InDesign.)

I probably would 8-). I'm only making pages for myself, however, not for
publication.

Other way around.

Preview has never been a particular favorite of mine, but i'll experiment
when I have more energy. Getting up at 4:30 am to go swimming, which keeps
my arthritic shoulder mostly operating, among other benefits, means I
rather run out of energy by early evening 8-)

As for Pages, i detest their layout things. I have templates of my own,
basically WP.

When I talk about putting graphics and text together, I prefer to start
with the graphics, so Pages is a major pain, since I have to work
backwards.

So you want to add text to an image?

Then use the right tool for the job. You want an image editing
application.

Actually, I have, but it didn't quite do what I wanted. It's a nice little
program, though.
