New problem for me I know has been discussed here in the past. I follow some bigger groups that I mostly delete on my laptop with MTNW. Stupid Yosemite won't open that, either. I remember Unison being discussed here. Is it any good? I can use the old laptop for that as well as graphics editing for a while longer, but it IS a rather old laptop. -- Erilar, biblioholic medievalist with iPad

Your options if you want to stay away from terminal, are going to be Thunderbird or Unison. I use both and for the most part Unison will do the job. Filters are rudimentary but once built will work quite well. Most folks who lost MTNW (myself included) deride Unison, but it is there and for now it works. Bth are free so try them, you have nothing to lose. -- Regards, Savageduck

For some attachments, the firs time you look at them, they are screen-sized. Good. If you go back to look again, then can be about 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch in size. Not good. The other thing it does is to save some images outside of the intended folder. For example, if you're saving a picture of a 1955 Chrysler wagon to your Chrysler folder, the image file shows up outside the Chrysler folder with a title of "Chrysler.1". If you change the suffix to .jpg, then it shows up as an image file with preview, and you also have to change the title to "1955 Chrysler Wagon", and then move into the folder. It works, but it's a hassle. Haven't run into any major quirks in text groups.

I don't know what's spinning over on the new laptop except that it' s
Unison and has been telling me it's downloading newsgroups all afternoon
now. I tried quitting and restarting, but I guess I might as well trash it
at this point. 8-(

Select an individual newsgroup in the sidebar and read in just the one. Sounds like you've got lots of them. and have selected the entire folder in which they are placed. Just a guess.

MTNW 3.5.2. and that's what I'm still using for a much longer list of groups tha I have on the iPad. I have yet to find a usable one for the new laptop with Yosemite. OK, NOW what am I doing wrong? I have now slogged through installation and failure with Unison and Thunderbird multiple times. In other words, I can’t contact the big list of them except with the old laptop, just as that’s the only place I can edit fotos. If I can’t get simple binary newsgroups on the new laptop, I’m not about to trust it to edit fotos, much less destroy anything else on my iPad, so consideration of such programs is on indefinite hold.. Both seem to agree that my initial settings are OK, as far as that goes, but Unison just spins multi-group logos endlessly and will not let me add a group manually, while Thunderbird gives me a space to type them in but won't let me do it. MacSOUP apparently wants money to even try. If the free ones won't open, I'm not about to pay for another failure. -- Erilar, biblioholic medievalist

As with MTNW or any other Usenet client you first have to load the news groups your server has available, I am using Giganews these days, and I see you are using the same with MTNW, so you actually have a subscription to a server providing access to binary groups. There is nothing stopping you using giganews with multiple UseNet clients. Are you trying to set up Unison with your eternal-september.org account or your news.giganews.com account? I would give giganews a try. Once you have that set up, from the menu go to *Group*->*Reload All Groups List*. When that is done, and it should only be limited by the speed your ISP provides, start subscribing to the NGs you want. In the column on the left select *All Groups*. You should see something like this: <https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1295663/FileChute/screenshot_105.jpg> That image shows simple navigation to comp.sys.mac.system. You can then select that as a favorite and it will join the list which you can rearrange as you please. An easier way to find a particular group is to use th search function. Using that, when in the *All Groups* section, just type in the search window and you will be directed to the required goup. In this example I have searched for comp.sys.mac.apps. By the time I typed comp.sys.mac I didn't have to go further as I was presented with a whole bunch of groups with those characters in their names. I have selected a few by placing a green check mark in the box to the left of th name. That adds those to my subscription list. <https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1295663/FileChute/screenshot_106.jpg> -- Regards, Savageduck

Try this: <https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1295663/FileChute/screenshot_107.jpg> > An easier way to find a particular group is to use th search function. > Using that, when in the *All Groups* section, just type in the search > window and you will be directed to the required goup.
